Moving a cow Up

I have a 2 year old Shorthorn heifer here that we bought. She is due to calve in mid-June. What I am thinking of doing with her is, once she has calved, I plan to wait about 40-45 days and then give her Estrumate to bring her around and then breed her to the bull. The plan hopefully being to move her up a couple months. Has anyone had success doing this, or is it even feasable?

Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. It's worth a try. But possibly just running with the bull may bring her in. I would probably give her a shot of GnRH at around 30 days just to get her to shed the CL and start cycling.

That WOULD be ideal, but he is going to be about 2 hours away from her, and I don't want to breed her to the Black Angus bull that will be around here. So we are going to have to wait until about the 20th of July when we pull the bulls and bring them home. She is on Alfalfa/Grass pasture so nutrition should not be a problem. I will have to see if I can get some GnRH from the vet and try that as well. So the protocol there would be to give her a shot of GnRH at about 30 days and then a shot of Estrumate at about 15 days later??

I personally wouldn;t give her the second shot. Without the second shat she would be in heat 17-21 days after the GnRH. But then again, I'm, not a big fan of inducing heats, or synch programs either for that matter.

You can use a cidr any time after 25 days with your pasture conditions. Just follow protocal for cidrs. I have done it at 21 days and it worked for me. You need that rising plain of nutrition.

Well, I guess if she will come into heat within 21 days after that there really wouldn't be much point in giving her a shot of Estrumate 15 days later. Easier and less stressful to wait the extra 5 days ;-)

I thought about a CIDR as well, but with just the one cow I don't think I want to bother with it. She will be on a rising or at least high plane of nutrition what with being on the alfalfa. Hopefully it works and we can get her moved up at least a month. We have bought late heifers before and had them catch up with the herd within 2 years before, but I would like to get her moved up pretty close to the tailenders of the main herd next year.
