I acquired a used self-catching headgate and am Looking for some help/ideas on mounting. There's four half inch holes on the back of the frame, as well as two holes on top, and bottom of the frame. I have it in my mind to mount it with the four holes on the back to a couple 6x6's or doubling up 4x6's with some threaded rod, but I don't know that I'm super confident in half inch. I've also kicked around the idea of welding some tabs onto the side of the frame for mounting. I've got a yearling bull and heifers I'll be running through it, but I'd like for it to be able to withstand abuse as they grow. Will half inch threaded rod be sufficient, or would any of yall more experienced folks suggest going another route?

As well as I can remember, Mine was mounted with half inch threaded rod around twenty years ago. Maybe longer. Still working with a lot of grown cows and some bulls through it. I'd threadlock the threads or touch a welder to them to keep them tight. I didn't do either but it would be better. Check your private message about Winston Salem.

I've seen several over the years that were bolted to rail road ties. Set your ties a little wide, then bolt a angle or channel iron to the ties to keep them from spreading. Bolt the head gate to the irons. 1/2" grade 8 bolts will be fine.

I have a head chute very similar that I put up about 3 months ago. Have only ran weanlings and 9-weight steer through it but no issues at all. I mounted using 1/2" threaded rod, couple big washers. Mounted one side to the corner of a building (6x6) and another 6x6 on the edge of my corral
