Just a couple of pictues of a couple of my longhorns. These pictures were taken back when there was grass in my pasture.
The old cow is 19 now, born in '86 on the famous King Ranch of Texas. She is registered as "King Ranch 102" and you can see the famous brand on her left hip in this picture.

Very nice pics.

I know there are many who do not like the LH - but having crossed them with about everything there is under the western Canadian sun - I have seen them thrive where others could not, calve out with no probs, maintain condition in northern Alberta winters and still wean a decent calf.

Not for everyone, but there is room in a lot of commercial herds for a little bit of LH.

Regards,

Bez!

That cow looks great for 19. Has she had a calf every year. I am an angus huy, but I would love to see a 19 year old productive angus. Thanks Kaneranch

Talk about paying for herself! 19 years is a long time.

I believe they do have some Longhorn cattle down there on the ranch, but I think just for show. They have created a breed all their own, I believe I'm right, named "Santa Gertrudas." They are red cattle.
The old girl has had 2 calves since I have had her, but didn't have one last year. I don't know if she has had her last or not, but I've seen the bull following her around.
Here she is with one of her calves and the other cow with a little one is her daughter. The picture of the old cow is recent.

I think longhorns are just a waste of cowhide myself...okay for breeding heifers as long as there half Angus...but so is a jersey if its half Angus

Hey Spot your sure right about tthat...and if you want to waste grass raising horns and spots thats sure your right. Good luck to you on getting those purty flat horns and paint just right so yiou can satisfy that demand

Good lookin old lady.

We had some people out last week and I showed them our old cow that is 5-6 months bred and will be 21 this spring, and they couldn't believe how good she looked. She is in just as good or better condition than most our 8-10yr olds.

Buck,
Good looking old cow. The King Ranch does still maintain a herd of Longhorns. Of course, that's where Santa Gertrudis originated but they've also developed a composite breed in the last few years called the Santa Cruz (consists of Santa Gertrudis, Red Angus and Gelbvieh). I can't remember the exact amounts of each breed that went into this composite. I have some cows with King Ranch (Peeler ) breeding. The Peeler and Phillips (Texas Ranger) lines are the largest and beefiest Longhorn types. I like to have a fair amount of these bloodlines in my herd.

Texas Longhorns saved Texas during Reconstruction and became the cornerstone of the US beef industry.

It's been a long time since reconstruction.

I dont guess I get it????? Whats that got to do withnow?? Like african slaves saved the south and became the cornerstone of the US cotton industry..so what..whats that got to do with now?? Should we get rid of pickers and strippers and go back to having slave auctions?? I dont think so...I dont get it

There's nothing to get, he just made a comment that they helped rebuild the economy after the Civil War. It's a historical fact, probably isn't going to change anything or anyone.

????? I didn't mention slavery or cotton. Rustler got it right. Just making a comment that Longhorns have historical significance and due to their hardiness and fertility, Texas didn't suffer as much during Reconstruction as other Southern states because they helped Texans rebuild their shattered economy. Also, mules, horses, and oxen helped settle this country, but I'm not planning on selling my truck or tractor anytime soon. You get riled easily, don't you?

You got that right JT. I only have a few acres to raise cattle, and I choose to raise LHs. That is my right as a citizen of this great nation. If he chooses to raise jackasses that is his right. I wouldn't do it but that's me. I work as a construction superintendent, and I'm out of state most of the time. When I do get home, there is nothing better to me than having my coffee and looking at my cattle. No two are alike and that is what I like. Nobody else has to think that way. As the song goes " You do your thing, I'll do mine".
