month old calf with hair loss

We have a month old Hereford calf who is loosing his hair along upper back. It obviously is itching him and the skin is thickening in the affected area. He is eating normally, is active and gaining weight, is not sluggish or exhibiting any other symptoms. We have treated for mites and other parasites with no improvement. The rest of the cows and calves in the herd do NOT exhibit any of these symptoms. Any suggestions?

I have some younger than normal calves with ring this year . . .

This probably is differnt than what you have , a few years ago one of my holstein bucket calves started losing hair on his face and neck , the guy I got my calves from told me to give him a shot of B-12 complex , I did and in about a week or so it cleared up.

Many thanks for the responses. I suspect nutrition (maybe B-12) is the issue rather than ring - but will follow up on both issues.
