montana cattle farm

Help Support CattleToday:

On the range land they stock something like 16 pair on a section.
Depends, but that's about average. Some sections won't support a family of Jack Rabbits, but some places the grass grows real good.

Could anyone tell me how many acres per cow you should have in northeast Montana? Thanks!

Depends upon the area-- I usually call it around 20 acres per pair to run 6-7 months...Some good creekbottom/river bottom pastures goes as low as 2-3 acres per cow-- in some of the old Missouri breaks bentonite hills and shale hills and hardpan country, its more than 70 acres per cow.....
Lots of variation in this country-- in our county alone we can have 4 different climates all at the same time-- shortsleeves in the south, while a snowstorm is going on in the north...But our county is twice the size of the state of Delaware also ;-)
