A little Kyana pride here. A new bridge to replace the circa 1929 span has been on the wish list for decades. And, Walsh Construction (of Canada) got the job with a plan to build a new bridge on temporary piers and slide it over on to the refurbished existing piers. When the whole project is complete, we'll finally be able to get across to cheaper cigs in Milton, Ky, and folk in Milton will be able to buy beer in Indiana. Win. Win.

Home the planners took that into consideration or you'll be adding lanes both directions soon. :lol2:

The old bridge was designed when the Model T was "state of the art". This new one has 12' lanes plus a pedestrian walkway. My grandad attended the dedication of the old bridge with President Hoover. There was a time when you could buy high-phosphorous laundry detergent in Ky, but not Indiana. That was a lively trade, for the stores in KY. And then, for a while, KY had the lottery but not IN. Trimble County, KY is dry. Which explains why the first store on the Indiana side is "Fillin' Station Liquors".
Engineers make dreams come true. Engineers really need a better slogan than "Pocket Protectors are US".

Yes, Mel. I think they already have. If you go to U-tube, they dropped the old bridge in the river with explosives and they were to cut it up to get it out of the way.

We've had a few big bridges built around here... you don't want to know about the cost though. While they were building one, a huge section somehow fell off and landed in the river... that must have been a big splash from a 150 feet up!... Then there's an old bridge (50 some years old I think) that collapsed while they were building it, killing a lot of the workers.. It's appropriately called the Ironworkers Memorial now

Been across new bridge on temp piers several times. sure is wider. old bridge with cattle trailer was a little tight fit. figured john250 would start a thread about the slide over. rumor has it there has been a few more things available in trimble co. over the years.

The plan:

Old bridge still in place, new span floated in and and raised to temporary location alongside old bridge.

New bridge in place on temp location and old bridge is dropped with explosives:

The old bridge has been removed here, and a section of the new bridge being slid from temporary perch to permanent site where old bridge originally was:.
