Last weekend, starting Friday night, I got the mac daddy of all toothaches. Yeah, hit me a couple hours after my dentist closed. Monday being a holiday, they weren't open then either, and for 3 days I was suffering bad, Had to self-medicate, and still didn't sleep for 3 nights. Tuesday morning, I woke up and it all of a sudden quit hurting. I had a lot to do, so never called the dentist Tuesday. Well about 6PM Tuesday, it came back like a freight train! So Wednesday morning, I was down there when he opened. He wouldn't pull it because it was abcessed, but sent me home with a prescription for some high-powered anti-biotics, and a 4 day supply of oxy codone, and a referral to the oral surgeon here in town. Called the oral surgeon yesterday ( they wouldn't answer the phone on Wednesday, and they set me up to get it pulled next Wednesday. Well, I got to thinking, about how I'd be down at the Kudzu place this weekend, and I run out of pay meds Saturday! Called my dentist, and the voice mail said" We are open 8-5, M-Th, and 8 til 1 on THursday. Closed on Friday." I looked at my phone, and it was 1:08! So. no more pain meds for me..... Sunday is gonna be rough!
Headed down there to the Kudzu place this afternoon, and I am glad I got that camper down there to stay in now! We will be tagging and banding 60-70 calves Saturday. Have to round up all 175 head of cows, sort out the ones with May babies, then sort the mommas away from them. Then rope and drag 70 calves. I am glad I wont. be going down there at 4:30 in the morning working all day, then driving home Saturday night.

Gonna pull Scott's 18' bumper pull combo that I used to bring Gail and her calves up here last week, with Smoke, the young mare I am riding for Scott and Lisa, and the Brangus bull Clay bought for me. He is going to just keep it down there, since he is going to be AI-ing everything he has with Red Char and Black Herf sexed semen ( for heifers). Oh, and this girl that I have been working with her, to show her how to get her barrel horse to quit being crazy before the run. She wants to learn how to work cattle, and she got out of college last week, so she is coming down to help. I will let her ride Smoke (he will teach her as much as I would) . Clay has to pull a load to the Oklahoma feed lot tonight, and Joe and Lisa won't be there, either.

And, I am gonna try out something I learned about 30 years ago. Me, my buddy next door, and 2 other guys were gonna go fishing on the Ga coast for 3 days. We were gonna leave at 4 AM. That night, we were out in his hsop, wiring up his wife's Astro van to pull my boat down there. We had been planning this trip for weeks. Well about 7:30 that morning he got a call on his bag phone. (This was in 1991, I think). It was his wife, asking him where the van was! It was time to take their 4 kids to school! So, THIS is when he told her he was going fishing for 3 days!!! You could hear her raising hell even from the back seat! When she hung up on him, I said " Damn, Steve. You hadn't already told her about us going?!! He said " No, IF I had, she would have raised just as much hell the whole time til I left. This way, I got a good night's sleep, and she will be calmed down by the time we get back!

So, I decided I would tell the ole lady about Amber coming with me, when she calls to check on me tonight! Wish me luck!! :)

After 4 days the antibiotics should have that toothache calmed down.
Once the infection goes starts going away, so does the pain...

I've got one that went south on me couple few months back. Got thru the antibiotics and had appointments set to have that one taken out and some other stuff done.

Day before, they call me and leave a message they need to reschedule. Called em back. Like 6 times over the next couple days. No answer. Every time. Jesus!

Anyway. It's been months. I've just been giving that tooth extra attention when I brush, floss etc. As long as it's kept clean and no crap remains below the gum line, it should be fine til it finally loosens up enough to pull/fall out

Edited to add
I'm not a dentist. Don't take my advice! Lol

What's that country song that's out now ? I've tried Jim , I've tried Jack ; maybe some Southern Comfort or Wild Turkey 🦃 even . I'm not a drinker but I've heard of folks self medicating with those .

Tomorrow will be the 4th day, so I hope you are right. The knots on the gum on both sides busted last night. Tasted awful, but I noticed it does seem to hurt less now. Haven't taken a pain pill since this morning, and I won't til I get down there this evening. , Will be leaving in a little while, and it is a 3 hour drive. I went to get fuel while ago, and noticed I was a little biut dizzy, so if I have to, I will let Amber drive down there. I am starting to worry that I might not have thought that through well enough. When my ole lady finds out, she is liable to knock that tooth out for me! I got Amber meeting me at Clay's place to help load the bull, and I wanted her to leave her truck there. T ought not to get mad.. I am almost to the day, 45 years older than that gal. What she is gonna raise hell about, is me not telling her ahead of time,. But, I am in it too deep to turn back now. Y'all pray for me!!

Wow, what a life :)

When people have an abscessed tooth and it comes to a head and drains - gums and oral tissues tend to heal really fast, so it grows over draining hole and fills up the abscess again. It is best to use a water pik set on high and on floss and blast the opening several times a day and keep that sucker open. Salt water is good too.

I vicariously feel your pain. Mr TC has a tooth that has been acting up forever. Even had a root canal on it, but nothing works and it flares up every few months. He was on antibiotics when he shattered his elbow/broke his wrist and the hospital gave him some IV but didn't knock it out. Back on antibiotics when he was released. And it's flared up again! He's scheduled for them to pull the dang thing but 1st available isn't until 7/1. And all those pain meds? Honestly, Aleve or Advil works just as well, if not better and without the side effects.

Got one like that also. Bit down on it about 2 weeks ago like normal chewing something, and almost died from the pain. Had to wait for Monday... it is a root dying and an abscess under the tooth... it has a crown on it from years ago. On antibiotics because it is a MAJOR disaster if an infection gets into tissue around joint replacements.... Scheduled to have it out on Tues... June 4th. Said it shouldn't be too bad a deal, don't need anyone to drive me... ought to drain for a few days... taste crappy but to keep rinsing it out.
The antibiotics have toned down the infection alot and I can even chew on it some, but it feels "funny" so it needs to go.... Tylenol arthritis strength is 8 hr and it really keeps it pretty quiet.

Debated a root canal but tooth under crown is 'iffy".... it is a molar you chew with so he said I might really miss it... Possibility is a bridge to the tune of 3500+ or an implant for about 5 grand.... we'll see how bad I miss it....

Not as miserable as I thought I would be. Setting that camper up down there was something I should have done years ago. We got down there about 7 last night. Amber came to my barn instead of Clay's, right while I was loading the horses on Scott's trailer( that I had borrowed last week. to haul Gail and her calves up here). She had her girlfriend with her, (and they really are girlfirends)...so I wasn't worried about what the ole lady would do once she found out I carried a 22 yr old girl down there for the weekend! LOL. I got to thinking: "Hell, I won't have a way to get the horses home!" So, I got Amber to hook to one of my trailers, and we loaded the horses on it. Then went to Clay's to pick up the bull. I told Amber I was buying the fuel,, and WHEW! She has 2005 (I think GMC 3500, reg cab, SRW, 4 x4 with that 502 cubic engine, and Allyson automatic. Her girlfriend is also a can chaser, and does break-away roping an goat tying. She drove my truck, since I was woozy from the opioids. I had called Scott on the way down, and he had saddled his rope horse, and had Zeke ride it down there, while he followed on the Gator. Scott was not able to ride, rope or wrestle calves to tag and band at all, so we worried about what to do. I said "guess we will have to teach Amber how to heel and drag," They were down at the barn with the horse when we pulled in. About half the herd was in the arena, too, getting salt, and the rest of them were at or in the pond. So, I decided to go ahead and pen the herd up last night. Me and the girls did it, and both of them did a right good job. I had told them if you are working cattle with horses, and they ever get to running, then you have screwed up. And they never will run, if you have people and horses that know how to do it, and there are no damned dogs or idiots with 4 -wheelers or on foot "helping". We had nearly an hour of light left when we got them penned, so we went ahead and cut the cows with tagged calves back out of the arena. All 54 of the ones I got from Clay's boss had calves, and there were 22 of ours with new calves. And, there are none of ours left to calf, I had figured that herd may still be calving in June, but nope....we are done!

The trailer of mine we had carried, was a 3h, sl, Sooner with a 4' sw LQ, and the girls stayed in it last night. So, everything is fine back home! :) Zeke spent the night with me in the camper, and talked my damned ears off til way after midnight!

This morning, I started heeling and dragging, and Scott showed the girls how to tag and band, with Zeke helping by holding the calves down. Out of the 76, we had 40 bull calves. After about 45, my hands were cramped, my rotator cuff was gone, and my tooth was killing me. So, the gf ( Jana) who is a breakaway roper, took over the heeling and dragging, while I took some pain pills, and pushed the tagged calves with their mommas into the stripping pen and return lane. We got done by 1PM, and the girls went on down to ABAC. I am sitting here in the camper now, and will head home after supper, or I might wait til in the morning...depending on how much I an still hurting.

Good news is, we are done now, til we start weaning and selling in July. Scott and Lisa's mare did fantastic... heeled those 45 calves as easy as a seasoned horse like Smoke. Gonna miss her when she goes back to them in July. She is a one of a kind mare.

When I get home tomorrow, gonna go ahead and wean one of Gail's calves and take it to Clay's pen over at his boss's place. They will be 6 months old in 2 weeks, so gonna do one now, and the other after the15th, then carry that borrowed calf back to its owner Sept or Oct... when ever it is 6 months old.

We were gonna take Scott's brother's bulls back in July when it is time to wean the Gyr x Herf-Guernsey heifer, but the black Simmental isn't holding up well in those conditions down there, so might go ahead and send him home soon.

I had one root canal in 1990, and it is one of the 5 things I will never, EVER, do again. I am a fast learner. I had one root canal, one marriage, one divorce, rode one bull, and jumped out of an airplane one time. Don't won't no part of either of those things again!!!

Pulling teeth seems to be a bigger deal for the dentists than for me these days. I used to think they didn't like doing it because they lose the potential for future income from that tooth but they just don't seem to have the skills to pull teeth these days. The best I've had lately was Lynelle up at the hospital, she used the elevator as it should be used and had no problem. The worst I've had was a big Kenyan who just came at me with the forceps with his nurse holding my head down, no use of the elevator first. When he started wriggling it from side to side I knew I was in trouble, teeth don't bend too well. The last one I had out was by a Indian (curry eating type) and he did a good job on a very tough tooth but it took a long time and a lot of sweat to get it loosened. He was a bit worried about me passing out which added to his anxiety but I was cool about it as long as he was being patient with it. I am starting to run out of teeth to experience more techniques. With my Veterinary background and own experiences I probably know more about pulling teeth than they do.

No kidding! One of my stepdaughters recently spent 8 days in the hospital and now has a PICC line so she can administer antibiotics every day for 8 more weeks. From a cat bite!!! Ferel beast bit through her knuckle and literally through the bone. Infection is in her bones & blood. And she had to keep the dang thing for 10 days to make sure it didn't have rabies (she's part of a rescue/foster/adopt program).

What is an "elevator", in dentistry?

I think it's like a little prybar. Hook under the tooth and lever it up slightly. Last one I remember was an old man here did one of mine. He did good. He had a stroke years ago and was doing taxidermy for several years before he died on us. His son took over, but he really wanted no part of it and sold out. He wasn't near as good as his old man anyway.

It is like a small screwdriver but with a concave blade, the aim is to work it down between the tooth and the socket and then rotate it slightly and hold it for 30 seconds so the peridontal ligament fatigues and separates, move it around the tooth and repeat, no levering or prying, the aim is not to break the tooth. The elevator will do the lions share of the extraction, the forceps are only used to pick up the loose tooth from the mouth.

Thanks for the reply. Ken, but I wish I had not read it til after Wednesday!

I've got 2 needing pulled, right next to each other. I too seem to have the luck of it hitting me at 430 on a Friday.

I didn't have my wisdom teeth removed when I was younger... big mistake. They've ruined my upper molars due to crowding.

Had one pulled a couple years ago by the roughest dentist around. He services the jails and all the junkies around. He's cheap. His office opens at 10:00 PM and goes into the morning hours on weekends. You want him to be the last resort. I felt like a calf in a chute. Was in and out in 10 minutes. The pain was over though. It'd be worth the drive in some scenarios.

He said "We aren't use to seeing patients that have had dental work in the past." I suppose that was a compliment, 😆.

Nothing to worry about Warren, proper use of the elevator is what you want, makes things a lot easier for you, just close your eyes and don't look at the instruments coming at you. You won't know what is happening and they'll have it out in no time.
