Minerals with CTC?

About all the minerals sold locally have CTC in them. The ones without it are pretty low price compared to the ones with, but lower on percentages. Is the CTC really a good or bad thing?

I have to say the Chloratetracycline, (CTC) has definitely got benefits. I've been feeding a CTC Mineral since early Spring, and have seen a remarkably low number of runny eyes, and not a single case of Pink Eye.It may cost a little more, but I'm definitely a believer in it. Of course, read the labels on a couple different brands of Minerals, the amounts of CTC vary.

I'm also a big fan of the minerals with CTC. Since I started using it, we have significantly fewer cases of pinkeye and when we do have one, it is much less severe and seems to cure quicker.

Many of the minerals that are intended for high endophyte infected fescue areas have CTC. Theoretically, the CTC helps animals contend with the endophyte by limiting the side affects. They're still getting poisoned by the ndophyte but the CTC helps their weakened immune system (from the endophyte) fight of diseases.

i would rotate the minerails with ctc during the periods they dont need it. to slow or stop the build up of resistance .... fly season and summer are a great time too use it especially for anaplasmosis

Should there be a period between resistance and fly?

The reason I asked was it looks like the way it was written that the fly resistance and the CTC were related

Well sort of. like rotating wormers or antibotics the parisites and diseases start too build up a immunity too them.

We use a mineral with CTC and Rabon in it. This stuff has been working great, we were using fly blocks but, that get's consumed too quickly and gets expensive but, this stuff we're using now. Well, you can count the flys on any one animal on one hand around here.

Do you use any other method of fly control or just the Rabon? I've never used the rabon mix - sticker shock. Mostly use the rubs placed in gate openings with good results until this year. I've switched from permethrin to an organophosphate and neither seem to put a dent in the fly population this year. Suggestions?

Sacked Rabon aint cheap. CTC runs about 22.00 for a 50# Bag.

Rabon and CTC are 2 totally different pre-mixes. CTC being a medication, and Rabon being an IGR. Measurements being mixed with feeds MUST be followed to a "T"

Both Rabon and CTC can both be over fed. I've sold lots of CTC pellets, and always tell customers to pay extreme attention to mixing directions, just as the label states, can cause death if over administered.

As far as Rabon goes, we dont sell much of the pre-mix, and I think a lot of Cattlemen and Cattlewomen in this area are seeing little to no results with Rabon, even when it's fed starting in early Spring. There's a lot of skepticism.I stand in that group as well.

They claim that you need to switch back and forth, to keep the effectiveness up. How true it is I don't know but, all bull aside we are in a lot better shape because of it or something odd is going on with the fly poplulation around here.

I use the 10% permethrin (Permectrin II) from Valley Vets. Mixed per label (sometimes up to twice label concentrations) into diesel fuel and applied to the rubs with a pump sprayer every week or two.

Try the 40% Permethrin. Much better stuff, costs a little more, but well worth it.
