I need to put up a better mineral/salt feeder for my Longhorns. It needs to be covered due to the amount of rain I get during the winter. Any ideas would be welcome.

I get rain too but I just put it in rubber tubs on the ground and move them when I refill them to prevent mudholes. I don't worry about the minerals getting wet. They eat it anyway, and if rainwater collects in the tubs they slurp it.

Bobg, we have a couple of these mineral feeders and so far, I am very pleased. Ours have horns also, so I wanted something they couldn't mess with and tip over or get tangled up in, and so far, no problems. It gets pushed here and there a bit, but nobody's managed to upend it. Got them through our regional cattle association for $140 each (seemed pricey to me, but they work well and are said to last a long time). And the minerals have stayed dry in driving wind and heavy rain. Haven't had snow on them yet. Cattle went right to them (I sprinkled some minerals across the top to give them a hint).

Here's the bull (our only one without horns) checking it out within 30 seconds of putting it out there.
