Milk prices

I followed two tankers home from my riding lesson today hauling milk out of Auburndale, Florida. I assume it was going to a local plant. I have a friend who works at a cheese factory and they've been closed down a couple of times recently because they didn't have the milk. What strikes me as odd is why the demand is apparently there but the prices are so lousy for milk right now? Can someone explain this to me?

The only pattern that seems to track anymore, is that when that monster milkcow called California is producing well, the whole country receives mediocre prices. Only when California has major problems producing milk do we see fair returns for milk.
Supply and demand don't seem to mean much the last 8 years.
