Miles City Line 1 Herefords had its sale yesterday. They sold around 30 - 2 year olds (a couple 3's). I listened to it on the internet. The floor price was $1200 and I didn't hear a bull sell for less than $3250. The top seller was a two year old at $8,750. His actual numbers were 76# bw; 392# ww and 857# yearling weight. With ratios of bw: 103% ww: 120% and yw: 119% and epds of bw: +2.9; ww: +55; yw: +96; and milk: +23. The bull's dam turned up open as a 3 year old and was culled. That's a hot sale!!!

I know this has been beat to death and was discussed heavily on "KK". Prices are up everywhere so I don't see this as surprising no matter the specifics. Folks pay a lot for unknown out crossed stuff all the time. Cows coming up open there is a function of their feed and the dichotomy of single trait selection for growth in an unfriendly growth environment. Within the closed gene pool, cows are genetically selected for growth while their resources suggest quite the opposite should occur. Would be interesting if the program was put some place where the feed was better.

I recently saw a straight station cow and was surprised at her size. I expected a lot higher frame on her. The feed may explain why they seem to get bigger when taken to other places.

The pairs summer on plus 20 acres per cow in the hills. After weaning the calves are feedlot fed and they are very well fed. The environment plays a part and the inbreeding plays a huge part. A lot of people don't understand the effects of inbreeding and how it affects the growth pattern of cattle. Very few people raise straight Miles City Line 1's and the ones you see in the sales out side of Miles City are mostly outcrossed, usually carrying about 1/2 the inbreeding coefficient of the straight Miles City cattle. Just that mild outcrossing will enhance performance greatly.

I am very aware of what line breeding does. Mine have been closed for 133 years to outside blood.

Nonetheless it is a single trait selected herd. Of which they are the "well" for most Hereford programs.

There are and have been many different selection criteria used through the years, but growth certainly has been the main emphasis.

They may be the "well", but some other breeders have been able to turn the water into wine over the years. And, yes, there's been a train wreck or two, also.

Don't read more into what I said. I simply stated a fact and was not implying any opinion. I have seen plenty that are impressive. I could care less what folks do with these cattle as they do not affect me in the slightest. Nor do I think anyone cares too much about the gossip on the other site either.

John, what did the Lot #1 bull bring?

I didn't hear or see a price on the first two 3 year olds. They may not have sold since prices were listed for all the ones I heard sell. It's not usual for some bulls to be culled prior to the auction.

The third 3 year old sold for 5500. 12534 was the higher seller. 12466 sold over the internet for 5750. It was the most solid sale I've heard up there. They have had some poor sales and usually lag the outcross Line 1s sales by quite a lot.

Thanks, John. I thought the Lot 1 bull was a decent looking bull in the video but he had just a little gimp in his walk like he was sore in his back end. I thought he might have slipped on the ice/snow and would be OK by auction time.

I meant to type "its not UNusual" for some bulls to be culled prior to the auction.
