I aint sure if it's been brought up on here yet or not, I have been busy lately, but 5 mennonites in Harrisonburg, VA died the other day at their dairy after a manure pipe got clogged...methane gas killed all of them...sad story :(

Tragic...but...

Something's seriously wrong with that event... Jumping into a manure pit to attempt a rescue, one after another like sheep crossing a road?

What about tossing a rope, stick, board, or something for them to grab onto?

Regardless of who, what religion they were...was a stupid thing for the 1st person to do (jumping into a manure pit to try to unstop a clog...). Of course, they possibly didn't have cell phones or other easy source of outside communication???

Anothing Darwin Award... A real tragedy and err in judgment.

That story was in the news last night. What a tragedy. I'm glad we dont't have to deal with manure pits and silos here.

Running it has happened before and it was a family of 6 people.
When a family member is in trouble you normally don't think of caution you just react.

Methane causes the person to go unconcious so throwing them a rope is of no help. The only thing that can be done is to call 911 and get firefighters with an SCBA there to get them out.
(Self Contained Breathing Apperatis)
Methane has no smell to it so you never know if it is there until it is too late.
The first person has probably gone down there to unplug the clog and done it numerous times and had no thought of a possible problem being there.

Lot of prayers are going out to this family.

Yes, it's tragic. It's also a fatal mistake that was totally avoidable. Anyone working around a manure pit should know to take proper precautions. Not doing so is irresponsible, and it cost five people their lives.
