Not where you are
What's the maximum amount of liquid nitrogen you would reccomend per acre on GRASS hay ground that was planted last fall and just had it's first cutting taken off?? Thanx

We do soil test. It's up to par. Just wanted to give some grass hay a kick in the but and I prepaid for some N a while back and wanted to throw some on it. Usually put 50per acre but, thought about 75, wondering if it would burn the stuff out??

75 won't burn it out by any stretch. 60 is what's always recommended on mine after each cutting. Beyond 60, the grass yield will continue to increase along with the increase in N but at a diminishing and uneconomical rate of return.

Depends on the amount of water that falls after the application.

I experimented one year with some ryegrass. In Feb I had the applicator double up on one piece of my hayfield and triple up on another.

He was putting down 60 lbs on the whole field, 120 lbs on the 1st test section, and 180 on the 2nd test section. There was plenty of rain that year and the two test plots did very well.

The plot that had the most nitrogen was so thick and lush it was hard to cure.

I think it would not have hurt to put down 240 lbs that year, but there is a point of no return somewhere I'm sure.

I wouldn't recommend it in a dry year though.
