March Bull

This is one of my dad's bulls. He was born March 2. He has gotten some creep. A minimal amount, just to get them used to eating out of the trough and to ease the transition for when he is weaned.

Your thoughts, critiques, analysis?

Very good calf, his biggest fault is that he could have been deeper chested and slightly stronger over the top, still a very good prospect, very masculine and lots of muscle in the hindquarter for a longhorn, very good head for such a young calf

Hard to fault anything with him. I don't think a young LH bull can get any better than that (in my opinion). Mama did a good job keeping him fed. What a butt!!!!

Seriously though hes one impressive calf with more muscle than I thought you could get on a Long Horn of any age - please excuse my ignorance of your breed.

Thanks for the all the compliments on him. He's really coming along pretty nicely, better than I expected actually. I wasn't too sure about him for a good while. I knew he'd be stout and have some size, but lately he's really starting to come together very nicely. His dad is an extremely powerful made bull, I've got pretty current pictures of him I'll post later today sometime. His dam is just a good cow. Not the most attractive or noticeable, but always has one of the bigger calves each year.

I agree. Ryan isnt your dad just a herdsman for someone? Is this really his calf or does he just take care of it? I am not putting anyone down I am just curious is all.

My dad and I manage Sand Dollar Ranch for a gentleman and his wife, and most of the pictures I post are owned by them. Our website is http://www.shopSandDollarRanch.com Although they do live at the ranch, we manage all ranch operations. Including but not limited to breeding strategies, feeding, showing, advertising, marketing, public relations, daily maintenance of animals and facilities, and sales. I think saying "just a herdsman" would be an undersatement of what we do out here.

However, the bull calf above is owned by my dad. He is sired by a bull raised and formerly owned by Sand Dollar Ranch, but the dam is bred and raised by my dad. He likes to keep a small herd for himself, and he has done very well for himself with as far as sales and showing has gone.

I guess we have different definitions of herdsman then. I thought of a herdsman as just someone who just follows orders with little to no input, checks cattle and fence. Spends just a few hours a week checking the animals. I have a friend that, besides his own job and herd, checks on helps out at least 3 or 4 other peoples' places every week, checking for calves, sick cows and checking the fences. I figured that is what you meant by "just a herdsman"

TNMBP- The duties that Ryan noted in the above reply to you are the same that ANY Owner, General Manager, Superintendent, Director, or any Executive whose responsibilities entail the overall management of a "For Profit" enterprise would demand. Ryan and his father are in a position to make or break the business of another individual, AND their own business and Reputation, by the proper and correct management and control of their decisions! It seems to me that they are doing an excellent job of accepting the entire responsibility of the Cattle and Herd under their jurisdiction.

Somewhere along the line I got the impression that YOU, yourself, TNMBP are in a somewhat semi-managerial position of some sort with your vast cattle enterprise! Perhaps I have been misled?

He has seldom has anything constructive to say about or to anything or anyone, I do not see the relevance to even ask the question about Ryan's dad being a herdsman and from the way it was asked originaly it sounded like a put down.
Just another one of his many ways to try and make himself look better.
I've seen his website and believe me he needs all the help he can get to look better.

Thanks TNMBP for clearing up what a herdsman was. I have been having trouble with the term for quite some time now and needed your experience and expertise to give me the correct definition. :roll:

Back on subject, he's a really nice bull. He does have some faults, but if he showed against the longhorns I've seen he'd win every show.

Btw in the dairy industry a "herdsman/woman" is a lot of times referred to as the CEO ...Everything falls upon a Herds persons decisions, and like Doc says they can make or break you. By the pics of your animals ,personally owned or ranch owned, it looks like the owner of the operation made a h@ll of a choice in it's CEO's. :tiphat:
