Here is a link to a video of the flood damage that a family made. The pics are from other families in the flood zone.

The fears are that the spring of 2012 will be worse that what is going on now. The lake level on Lake Manitoba dropped 1.5 feet so far. Still 3-4 feet higher than normal...or normal for the last few years of heavy summer flooding. The problem is that Lake St Martin which is fed by Lake Manitoba has not dropped. Nor has the fairford river. This means that when the snow melts, there is no where for it to go.

They are building diversion from lake st martin to buffalo lake. This then should send the water to lake winnipeg...which is where it should have gone in the first place. The plan is to get it dug and operational by November 1. However, they are only 25% done after more than a month at it. Freeze up happens soon. Yes out temps are higher than normal now, but freeze up still happens in our part of the world and usually the commercial fishermen are setting nets in November...so not too long.

Just a bit of history here, the Assiniboine river was diverted through a channel called the portage diversion into our lake. This water should have gone to the flood plain of the assiniboine area and the red river valley. This water would have however flooded out the city of Winnipeg. Our area is not a flood plain. We are on a rock land. Full of limestone and rock. This is the reason we are cattle country. The flood plains are however prime ag land and well the city. Just a side note...the city has no idea what they were spared. And they figure we should be greatfull for what help we sort of got.
