my son received grand champion on his 4-h dairy steer this week at the county fair. Here is our dilema, the steer weight in at 1545 lbs. He received reserve champion for rate of gain, which 3.7 lbs. He was weight in the middle of February. Our state fair isn't until August 24th. The steer can not weight more than 1600 lbs. I am looking for suggestions to keep his weight gain to a minimum between now and then, but not loose muscle tone. He currently has been on a full feed mixture of corn and minerals. We have had several suggestions from people i.e. walking him ALOT, beet pulp, throw him out on pasture with a small portion of corn a day. Not sure what to do..need advice. I will try to post a picture tomorrow. We would really like to see the steer qualify for state fair although he will be in the super heavy weight class there is still the chance for purple ribbon auction and $$$$.
