I was wondering if anyone has experience or opinions on using Pb Maine Bulls on commercial (Angus cross) cows. Any Pros or cons? Never here much around here about people using Maine Bulls. Lots of combinations of Limi, Angus, Gelbvieh, Semi but never heard of anyone using Maine. Is there a reason they do not?

Probaly because they are smart enough to know that the Maine X calves aren't as good as the calves from these other breeds.

Maine bulls still have BW problems also. I have some cows that I love. Use Angus bulls. I do know some guys using MaineX Angus bulls with preaty good success. There is a sale every year at Jordans in San Saba TX that sells 30 or so. Last I saw they went from 1500 to 2500.

We bought some Angus cows that were bred Maine a few years back and had a wreck. Birth weights were from 95-145lbs, 2 cesaereans, blah, blah, blah. Same thing with a package of heifers couple years later. I have no use for Maines what so ever. Big raw-boned cattle with too much frame and not enough flesh. They have nothing for my program that I can't find with what I'm already using.

Depends on your market. If you want to get into the club calf business, Maines are great. Most club calves these days have at least a quarter maine in them. However, that is another business but it is big money if you hit the right nitch. Club calves go for a fortune, hate to say how much we have paid for club calves and they weren't anywhere near the top of the heap. $3500 will buy you a middle of the road calf that can be competitive, not win, at the jackpots and if you are lucky get you in the final drive at your county fair!

If I had to pick, Between a Maine bull and a pack Yotes with my Heifers, I am picking the Yotes!!!!!

Whatabull, you have a higher opinion of the Maines than I do.

I think that Maine bulls are for a totally different type of buisness. I don't think that you can have one Maine bull for your commercial cows and your club cows. But if you had an angus you could breed both commercial and show. Maine's do have very high birth weights and I would not breed one to a heifer show or commercial. I would think about getting angus if it was me. THanks Kaneranch
