Have been in Charolais business for over 35 years, and have now added Herefords to their lineup. They are having a fall bull sale Oct. 17, 2008. Stated that they had been 3 years building a herd of elite Hereford genetics.

If you trust EPDs, they advertise their averages at BW 4.3, top 65%; WW 60, top 1%; YW 99, top 2%; Milk 19, top 30%; M&G 48, top 10%; SC 1.6, top 1%; REA .46, top 10%; IMF .40, top 1%; BMI Index $29, top 1%; CEZ $18, top 2%; BII $26, top 1%; CHB $35, top 1%.

By the numbers, Herefordsire, they may have already beaten you to the goal! :o ;-) Three out of four bulls pictured were Online sons, the other an HH Advance 225M 1ET son.

I've been watching them with some interest for a while. They have gathered up a very impressive set of donor cows.

Two of them are daughters of HH Advance 255 1ET, who's one of 6 bulls that's listed on the AHA site as a confirmed carrier of idiopathic epilepsy(IE). No mention on their website that they(the daughters) have been tested as IE free. Their IE status, and/or that of their bull calves selling, would be a "MUST KNOW" for me to consider purchasing one.

They caught my eye that is for sure. It appears they have a good chance at getting business from me. Those herd average numbers (probabilities) blew me away. I may have to take a trip down there. It is very interesting to note the Charolais to Hereford conversion. It looks like his strategy is anti-purist in nature which I don't care for. George knows I am a purist. LOL. Right George (I wrote I am leaning to the purist side not that I was one)?

Said all sale balls are tested IE free.

That's good to know. I've seen a number of Line 1 cows being sold in sales since the IE test has been available where they didn't state that fact in the catalog or when they were sold. Most have been in consignment sales or primarily polled sales where they might have had only a couple of Line 1 cows for sale. Some of them had known IE carriers close up in their pedigree.

Videos of their offering are now online at Superior:

The Hereford lots are Lot #66 through Lot #83.

For the most part I was really unimpressed, based on the videos.

I'm disappointed. I've always thought their Charolais cattle were among some of the best I've seen. I was hoping to see the same thing in their Hereford cattle. Their Hereford cattle have the EPD numbers and great lines backing them. But the visual results of the matings look pretty mediocre.

Other's thoughts?

I thought the bulls looked good. I looked at two of the M326 calves and liked what I saw, they should be good breeding tools and phenotypically I liked them as well.

And Camp Cooley is getting into Herefords, too? Sounds like there will be plenty of Hereford bulls to choose from in Texas. :D

True, even without DeShazer.....Texas has more Herefords than any other state, so you are right on!

They weren't the best ever, but not bad either. Of the three or four I looked at, I think I liked the M326 best, thought he looked better than his sire. He also seemed to be the calmest. The HH Advance 255M son I viewed concerned me with his nervousness.

The M326's bulls really didn't catch my eye. I guess I was just expecting more from them. I thought the group overall was sort of inconsistent. Some of the online's were decent, but then there was some that I'd of cut. I don't think any of them are really cut out for the purebred industry with the exception of a few maybe, but I think they'd make some nice baldies. When is the sale?

No offense, but I wasn't expecting much besides marbling out of M326, so I was pleasantly surprised that the topline was pretty good on the calf.

The sale is Oct 17. I agree that the bulls look more like they could go and work well on commercial herds rather than advance the breed in a purebred herd. But they might have more to offer carcass and growthwise than they do phenotypically.
