Strange situation, not sure if I have seen this one . Heifer calved this afternoon. Full term calf , full umbilical cord still attached to the placenta . 70 lb heifer calf . Did she stay in labor too long and the placenta separated ?

Didn’t think of that , it was under the calf . 🤔Mom was licking her and pacing around so she may have moved her trying to get her up .

From my experience the umbilical cord has to be exposed to oxygen for the placenta to detach. There is something called placenta previa in humans, but I've never seen it in cattle, where the placenta forms over the opening to the birth canal. That requires medical intervention in human birth though. It often causes major hemorrhage in the mother and death due to a lack of oxygen in the baby.

Mother doing fine?

Sorry for your loss. It's always hard!

Lost one in March that never stood, was DOA. Pried open its eyes and they were kind of grey, cloudy. Vet said most likely backwards or mal positioned calf and umbilical cord detached before delivery, essentially drowning the calf.
