Lost DD yesterday, she ruled the roost for 14 years around here.
She was deaf and had cataracts.
She got on a rattlesnake in the yard yesterday. She had been snakeproofed as a puppy.
It was by the carport where she liked to lay when I was outside. We hunted a lot of hogs through the years.

I hate that for you. It’s tough to lose a good dog/friend after all those years. You could be having a bad day and they are always there happy to see you. I lost one 2 years ago and still think about him often. Haven’t wanted to get another one just yet. Guess I’m too soft in my older age.
 
So sorry to read that CB.... lost my white german shepherd several years ago and have never found one to slide into her place...she kept the varmints out of the garden and no one got out of their vehicle that didn't know her... and she would be wagging her big tail and smiling at anyone who would give her attention... but she LOOKED the part..... some you just don't replace...
 
Sorry for your loss CB.
It's taking me 8 years to get new dogs since we lost our last ones.
A dog can bring you so much joy, but the day they leave you.... you never forget.

I said that I wasn't going to get any more dogs I was too old ....but since we just got our last two dogs recently I am really happy about it.
So I guess the bottom line is people really shouldn't stay too long without a dog.
 
This reminds me of what a little boy said- "The vet administered the procedure, and the family held Belker until he peacefully slipped away. As they talked about how meaningful he had been to them and wondered why dogs lived such a short time, the 6-year-old spoke up for the first time.

“People are born so that they can learn how to live a good life — like loving everybody all the time and being nice, right? Well, dogs already know how to do that, so they don’t have to stay for as long as we do.”

Fourteen years by that carport is a long stretch of life shared with one dog. Snakeproofing only does so much when the years pile up like that. How many hogs you figure she put you on in that time?

We took out a hundred to two hundred of hogs yearly up to a couple years ago. When she went deaf I made her stay close to me.
Her eyesight had started getting worse lately.
