Had a calf four days ago. It was a big calf seemed healthy, cow had it in a back shed. Got the cow and calf in the calving barn and gave it vacines and seen it get up to suck cow. All was looking good. I noticed it had a little cough the next evening. I went out to check cows at about midnight and seen the calf up sucking. The next morning I came outside and the calf was dead.

What I know is that the cow did not lay on the calf.
The calf never seemed to be real energetic
it did had a cough and it slept more that most new calves.

One guy said maybe Pneumonia? What kind of vacines are there that could help prevent this from happening again?

Any help would be great!

What vaccines did you give it? Are you talking an actual vaccine or an antibiotic as they are two different things.
What was the weather like?
Pneumonia would be my guess, and Resflor would take care of that.

The only birth vaccinations we give (when we tag and weigh the calf in the first 24 hours) is:

1. Bo-SE (prescribed by vet) -- Selenium and something else because we are in a deficient area for this mineral
2. TSV-2 intranasal (over the counter) -- assists in the prevention of pneumonia and can be bought in single dose vials

Quick pneumonia is a hard thing to catch and a 50/50 shot at best if you catch it in the first 12 hours of onset -- sorry for your loss -- they all stink and you can second guess what you did versus what you didn't do until the end of time...

chin up, step left, and move forward

again, sorry for your loss

What I give is an antitoxin:

Clostridium Perfringens Types C and D Antitoxins- 5 cc by mouth and 5 cc under skin.

weather was about right at 32. I got the calve inside dried off and warmed up.

TheBo-SE (prescribed by vet) -- Selenium and something else because we are in a deficient area for this mineral
2. TSV-2 intranasal (over the counter) -- assists in the prevention of pneumonia and can be bought in single dose vials
Are these shots reasonable in price?

They are a lot cheaper than one dead calf!

Yes...

TSV-2 is about $1.50 to $1.76 (depending on where/how you buy it)... ValleyVet currently has the 25doses x single dose kit for about $44, but if you only have a few head your local feed store might sell some individual shots to you for about $2/each... make sure they give you the cannula (it's the little doo-dad you put on the end of the syringe to give the shot into the nose -- sometimes they forget this comes with the vaccine).

Bo-SE --> $0.25 a shot, we buy a bottle or two a year that has 100 each 1 ml doses in it for around $20 to $25
