Anyone know how many cattle salebarns (personal and video) are in operation in the USA?
Looked thru USDA websites and couldn't find it.
I figured if Texas is representative, it's about 1 per county, and there are 3144 counties or equivalent in the USA but I know some metro counties won't have any and other counties have more than one located within the county.
?

I don't know how helpful this will be, but, here in Virginia there is not a sale-barn/stockyard/auction in every county. But some counties may have 2.

I don't think there's one in every county in NY either, or New Jersey for that matter.

I'm surprised that there are only 3,144 counties (or equivalent) in the USA. I would have thought there would be more.

Keep in mind that Texas is not representative of the rest of the country. In Washington there are only 4 actively operating sale barns. There are a couple others that have less than 50 head a week. And one that seems to operate seasonally. I can only think of 7 in Oregon and a couple of those are not on solid ground. I have been told that there are only two in the entire state of Nevada and they are both in the same town.

Here in missouri we have the 6th most cattle of any state, we have 114 counties and right around 30 active sales with another handfull currently shut down but could re open.

[No] why would you expect anyone to have that info at their fingertips?

Why would you think Texas is representative of anything?
For example; Do you really think there are a lot of cattle sale barns in Alaska, Connecticut, Delaware, Hawaii, Idaho,
Maine, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Jersey, Oregon, Rhode Island, Utah, Vermont, or Washington, just to name a few?
My guess would be counties with no Cattle Sale Barns would far out number counties with 2 cattle sale barns.

SOB go back to cattle 101 maybe this is why he said Texas was representative. I will include a link so you don't think I made it up you know since I have no integrity and all.

Always seemed that way GB..and two in some places that were really in "cow country". A lot have gone out of business. Got a half dozen around here within an hours drive. Guess they're all doing ok.

I know this post of mine don't mean anything, because I can't back it up with anything. It seems I read somewhere, maybe here on CT, that there are less than 300 sale barns in the US that have regular scheduled sales. I remember wondering what the definition of "regular" meant in that context.

Lot to go through, and not all the salebarns are listed in the business name, but here's the list of bonds.

Very interesting information. I recognized a number of names in Oregon, but none were actual sales barns. They are buyers I might call to come out and buy my calves direct. I can think of 3 Sale barns located within 3 hours North of myself. Eugene Livestock, Lebanon & Woodburn. None of these were on this list. I don't think this list includes actual sale barns, but rather the buyers who might attend these sales and buy many of the calves.

There is a few sales on the list, and then there's alot of the names that are owners of sales who have there bond in there name instead of the barn. But yes, it's also all the bonded buyers.

I wonder why I don't see the names of the Sale Barns owners on this list? I don't know the owners of Woodburn, and can't remember Eugene right now, but I think I would recognize it. The auction I sell at is located in Lebanon Oregon, and has belonged to the Cowarts since 1987. I don't see their name on the list. I wonder if they hold a different type of bond, since they don't buy any cattle, only sell on commission?

Here is a different list I found at the USDA website. My auction yards are listed on this one.

http://www.gipsa.usda.gov/psp/regulated/SOC_list.pdf

That first list was for those buying on commission and this one is for selling on commission. There were 57 pages for those buying on commission, but only 20 for sellers. There were about 60+ names on a page, so less than 1200 market agencies selling on commission in the US.

Good job! I found that once and couldn't come up with it today. So there's the list, although there's alot of sales on that list that don't count in GBs question.

GB we have 25 here in Va.
sky, did you notice that most of those are west of the mountains? And there are a few buying stations that are not listed. But they are not an auction, they just give you what they want to give that day.

Dirt so poor on your end of the state the cows wear out their teeth before they get their mouth full. hahaha
Actually it is the number of cattle. Not many in your area and hardly any south of you to the NC border. Its just not worth the haul for many and they have planted it in pine instead.

:lol2: Don't you mean the SAND is poor on my end of the state ?figured it had to do with cattle numbers but whats confusing as heck to me is that Winchester barn is one of the best barns to sell at and I can't figure out why. I guess Maryland folk come down or something. It is about 8 cattle farmers in this county IF and big IF that
