Looking for comments on possible new bull

Well as the ad states he does have hair.....not sure what that has to do with making him a good herd sire. He is lacking depth of body and spring of rib in my opinion. He does appear to have an adequate hind quarter.

I kinda like him. I'm on a wide screen so I can't comment on the depth/length, but other than that I think he's got the potential to be a great addition to your program. I'd definitely go see what he looks like in person and if he still impresses you try to get him bought.

I'm a sucker for a smooth made, well proportioned [ balanced ] bull, so from the pictures lot 71 would be my choice.

Yeah, I like him too. Very well balanced. What throws me off of him is that he doesn't seem to have the length to him that we need to maintain in our program, even with the angled photo. :cowboy:

This is the other possibility. Lot #132. Bottom of the page.

I like him, but not sure if he is short or just the way he is standing in relation to the camera. :cowboy:

132 is another one that I like. I dont think he is to short you need to go and see them and then decide. You may not even like the ones you picked when you get there.

For some reason the links don't work for me, post the pics if you can, I'd like to see them.

Here is a link to the catalog page. Does this work for you? :cowboy:

http://www.hirsche.com/start.html

No, I get an internal server error message saying the site either is undergoing maintenance or has a programming error?

Only site that does this for me, others works fine, I'll never understand computers.

I got hirshce's catalog in the mail today. read every footnote on every animal (in the part of the catalog that wasn't upside-down anyways). I had to chuckle at some of the footnotes he wrote, especially for his LOT 1 and 2 flushmates. I guess I always thought your "top" cow always raised a good one. Also in the footnotes for his lot L reference sire and his Lot 3 bull calf. In those footnotes he sounded almost surprised that a more typical rancher bull would look so well after heavy use. I remember thinking when Grant bought that 179R bull from Fenton at Calgary that he wasn't anything close to what Grant's program was about (atleast in my mind) and for the life of me I couldn't figure out why he had bought that bull... but I remember telling the guy next to me at the sale that was probably the smartest move he ever made.

Anyhow - Aaron, I wouldn't want to be holding a production sale these next couple months and you might just get one of those bulls bought better than you probably could have in the last few years. Good luck.

by the way - the lot 3 (129U) was by far in my opinion the best "looking" calf pictured - wish he had a different bottom side pedigree.

The problem is, I am counting on money from bred cows and breeding stock to be sold in the next 3 weeks. So, we will see how that goes. If my consignments don't sell well, then I guess Grant will have to sell them bulls to someone else. I agree...this is the time to buy some great bulls if there ever was a time. I was planning to spend $3k on the next bull, but with everything the way it is, and fuel prices dropping...I might get a pretty good deal.

We both sure do think alike. I also picked that Lot 3 as the best calf, but am a bit leery on the bottom half of the pedigree. What was it about the Quigley line that people didn't like. I haven't met anyone terribly impressed with them, but have never asked what their fault is. I am suspecting they lacked muscle, but not sure.

I know a neighbour's son that lives outside of Medicine Hat and is the man to know to find the best H. Herfs in AB/SK. He has bought a bunch of heifers in the past from Lehr's and Floyd Anderson, and bulls from Nixdorff's and Dallas's. I will have to get his number and find out his picks from Hirsche's.

I don't know about Quigley, never seen any of his progeny...but he goes back to the Page bull and personaly I never could get myself to like those cattle - just not my type. Maybe it was just a case of people having a hard time accepting something different and genetics from another country... I don't know.

I am planning to go up in your country this bull season and look. I have a feeling a guy could get an awful good bull bought reasonable. Probably go to Fenton's and Crone/Bennett sale. Always go to Nelson's sale cause they are so close and then go visit the Ulrich's and Andy. Some places I have always wanted to go visit are Bannerman, Mitchell, Marvin Nixdorff, and Bristow herds... maybe this year.

THATS RIGHT! Now she all comes back to me. Yeah, Quigley goes back to the Dunoon Page bull. And that "Buck" bull was another Dunoon genetic defect, nothing appealing about him, I found. I didn't mind the Page bull, but felt he didn't really bring anything more to the table that North American breeders already had (he didn't even have much for pigment if I remember), plus (getting to what you said) he was raised in another country, so you don't even have an idea if he may work or not. I saw a few Page progeny, but always as part of the show circuit, never in a practical setting.

Bannerman, Fenton and Mitchell are ranches I would like to visit. Do Fenton's put a catalog out for their sale? I always did like the 254E bull of theirs. Had some semen on him but tank failed before I could use it. :cowboy:
