I figured there would be no better place to get an opinion than on here. My family has expanded and I am looking at a newer truck 2010 or newer. I am a die hard Cummins fan yet the newer Powerstokes are looking nice. I am looking to buy one with less than 20,000 miles. Looking at buying a diesel. What do you recomend and why or why not. No offense I am not looking to get a Duramax been there done that not impressed. So the toss up is Cummins or Powerstroke. Truck will also be used as daily driver possibly around 200 miles per day round trip to work and back then a hard life on cattle farm. Any advice is appreciated Thanks.

What kinda load do you want to pull? There are a couple of new Cummins that get great mileage in a 1/2 ton truck. Actually, Nissan will have a Cummins in one model pretty soon.

Well, you're probably not going to appreciate my advice. :hide:

Why the hell do you need a Cummins or Powerstroke pickup to use as a daily driver 200 miles a day to work and back? Are you actually hauling some kind of payload one or both ways? Sailboat fuel doesn't count. ;-)

I recommend you buy a good used Honda Civic or something similar. Twice the mpg of a diesel pickup, cheaper fuel costs, cheaper maintenance costs, cheaper everything.

Put the money you save into the future needs of yourself and your growing family. Possibilities are limited only by your imagination. (a slush fund you can raid when necessary, needed improvements around the place, college/votech funds for your kids, retirement nest egg for you and your wife, etc)

Buy a good pickup if you really do need one. But if your current ride will get the job done reliably for the foreseeable future as long as you don't run the wheels off it @ 200 miles per day, keep it. It will last a long time around the ranch. And will still be avaiable to drive on days when the weather proves to much for a little Honda.

My :2cents: and worth what you paid. Good luck and best wishes in whatever is your decision. :tiphat:

If I were looking for a new or as you said used under 20k miles diesel I would join Diesel Bombers.com or Cummins Forum.com or Mopar 1973 Man.com. I think if you would read these fourms you would see the kind of repairs needed to keep these trucks on the road. There is no end to the expense. Good luck.

I had a 2012 Ram 4500, a 2013 GMC 3500, and a 2011 Chevrolet 3500 for my business. I just sold the equipment part of the business including the ram and gmc. I am still driving the Chevy but if I were buying a diesel I would buy the ram and may look at Ford. We had a lot of trouble out of the GM's. I agree with Kerley on the maintenance and repair cost being expensive and if I were buying a new one today I would seriously consider going back to a 3/4 ton gas burner. A diesel has more torque and is better for pulling but for a general farm truck the f250 6.2 or GM 6.0 would get a serious look. A gas burner gets worse mpg but gas is cheaper per gallon and so is maintenance. Don't get me wrong I love the power and feel of a diesel so it would be a hard choice for me but I hate the new emissions junk. I'm driving a GM but honesty hate GM and am a ford person. My ram was a great truck and I have heard good things on the new ford so if your set on diesel your looking at the right two in my opinion.

X2. You will never come out ahead commuting that many miles in a pickup. If you do get another truck for what you are looking at I would seriously consider a new truck. Unless the used market is much cheaper where you are at a 2010 or newer with less than 20k miles will cost within $7,000 what a new truck will cost. By the time rebates and the better APR on a new truck are figured in the difference is even less. Congraluations on the new addition.

One thing to remember with RAM is if you get a 2500 they come factory with 3.42 gears. If your not pulling heavy and DD'ing for 200miles those gears could help on fuel mileage.
