I don't spend a lot of time looking back but every once in awhile something brings back memories. This morning I saw a 2015 Corvette being driven like one should be driven. OMG, what a good looking car. I had a '67 Vette. Bought it new. It was red with black "racing strips" down the middle. A 435hp, 427, three deuces and four speed. God, that car was fast! Back in the day, the horsepower was gained typically from cubic inches - brute force hence the term "…there's no substitute for cubic inches except cubic dollars". All the things that hot rodders did to their rides back then is finally showing up in production cars today like headers, fuel injection, tuned intake runners, sophisticated cam profiles and on and on. Wonder why it took Detroit so long to catch on? Todays Vette can be purchased with 427 CI in A SMALL BLOCK and produce a lot more than 435 HP on a CR of <10:1 with A/C, power steering and a weight of around 4000 lbs. And they turn the quarter in < 4 seconds. Mine would do 4.3 seconds in the quarter and weighed around 3000 lbs.

A member of my wife's family rented a drag strip last Saturday night where all the kin and friends run what ya brung. She drives a Mercedes SUV that consistently clicked off 100 MPH in around 13 seconds. Her husband, on the other hand, drives a Porche 918? that ran 125 MPH in the mid to high 10's. These are STREET cars, my friends. Expensive? Yes, but never-the-less, daily drivers - grocery getters.

Just wondering what some of you "young" folks drove back in the day

The family car back then had 442, 455, 440, 427. They all had power. If dad had known he would have beat me to death but we had a couple of big family cars that would do over 100 in the 1/4 mile. I still occasionally drive a 1976 Jeep with a 401 and 4 speed. It is a gas hog though.

I had a '69 GTO too. I totaled mine in '73 when a guy took a left turn in front of me. I also had a 65 El Camino that had a 425 hp 327 in it. I traded it off before I killed myself in it.
