Ok, here's one to pick apart. She turned two in January and has a bull calf that was born in December. She milks well and is doing a great job raising a big calf. Yeah, I know she has a little bit of horn but other than that and the fact that she's standing on a hill side-go ahead....

What's to say? She's a longhorn. Looks good to me. Plenty of flesh, deep-bodied. What's wrong with horn? Isn't that part of the breed? Or is mainstream Longhorn fashion directing you guys to go polled?

Darned no good longhorn - she is a wreck and I think you need to sell her to me!

:D

Looks good. Looks like she is holding up well, especially for having a calf. What is her breeding like? Have you shown her any? She has good depth, and looks like she has some thickness to her. Who did you breed her to? Got pics of the calf? Can't beat that flashy black and white in the pasture either.

She looks like a great producer. She is still just a baby! She should give you 20 more great calves. Great color pattern. I would like to see her calf also. How about her bloodlines?

Thanks for the compliements on the cow. She's out of a Not Gunna son so that's where she gets her body. We have six of these daughters and they are all big bodied, good milking cows. No pure country, main stream Longhorn fashion isn't prompting me to go polled with my cattle. I just made those comments when I posted her picture because usually when we post a photo of a Longhorn we get blasted good for the horns. I don't have a photo of her bull calf but I'll take one and post it. He's a well built calf but doesn't have alot of color, right now he's being considered for beef in the future. I haven't shown this cow but we may put her in a non-haltered show, she was never halter broken.

Rustler,
What is the name of that Not Gunna son? My bull is a Not Gunna grandson and I am really happy with him. I think Not Gunna is a better bull than most give him credit for.

Very nice Rustler. Looks to me that you are on the right track. ;-) You and Ryan start working together and there is no telling what y'all can do.

I think the primary problem people have with the horns is the single trait selection that goes on in the breed. You can breed as much horn on as you want as long as there is a good functional cow under that rack and I doubt that you will have to many comments about the horns.

I have always had a soft spot for the venerable LH. I know folks who always put their heifers under a LH bull.

A great animal and as for horns - well I live with them and have learned to work with them.

If I were in a different part of the world I would have them in my fields again.

There are longhorn breeders in Canada! I believe the 2003 World Grand Champion bull (Saltgrass) came out of Canada. I could hook you up with some names and numbers if you want ;-) .

I know several folks who breed them and many more who run them.

Unfortunately where I am located I would not be able to move them. They are too heavily discounted.

There is not a LH to be found within 12 hours of driving from my front door.

Like I always say - sell into the market.

Does not stop me from liking them tho'.

Take care,

Bez!

Makes sense.

The Not Gunna son that our six daughters are out of was a bull named Gunna Be. He belonged to a friend of ours and we got the daughters from her at various times. He was sold at the Eastern Summer sale in Kentucky about three yerars ago and unfortunately I believe he was bought by a packer so I don't guess there'll be any more of his offspring around. I bought this heifer about six weeks ago from a fellow who had bought her from our friend as a weaned heifer. He also bought a pretty good bull that he wound up taking to the sale barn so I can guess where he went. This fellow came down with liver cancer and wasn't able to take care of them so I bought the heifer and was glad to get her as we've been very pleased with these Not Gunna gals. I have an eleven year old Not Gunna daughter that I've about decided to put in the Fall Horn Showcase sale-she's heavy bred to our straight Butler bull-Virginia Gentleman. She'll probably have a heifer and I'll kick myself for consigning her.

Rustler,
Is the friend your refering to that owned the bull, the woman that owns Fourwind Cattle Co? If so, I know her well and know the Gunna Be bull as well. He was a nice bull. I always wondered what happened to him.
Thanks,

yep, Jody Shaw. We've been friends for a number of years. I hated to see that bull go but just didn't need him. I sure do like his daughters. We're breeding them to various bulls and they've all done well. They've especially done well when bred to our Whelming King grand son Heineken Dark.
