Have a friend that sells Lims and has a nice crop of yearling bulls. Thought that we would AI again this year but do want to go have a look at the boys. Will be breeding six heifers (two lim cross, three angus and one Herf ) this spring so need some advise on Lim EPDs just in case we see one that just has to go home with us.
She has a few with BW EPDs below 3.
How do these look:
BW actual BW WW YW MA SC
95 2.2 41 72 29 .3
85 2.2 42 77 31 .3
88 1.2 28 53 22 0

Thanks for your input

According to my new ABS catalog, the breed average for current Limousin sires is +2.1 for BW EPD. Average calving ease is +6.1.

Hello Dave, Frankie and Van are both correct with their posts. Here are the breed averages on all sires at this time from CED to Scrotal ... Average Sires: 6 2.1 38 71 19 2 ... On the link that Van posted ... IMO the Limousin breed might not have enough data to be as accurate on the CED EPD as we need to be. We only started using that EPD a couple or three years ago. I own two AI sires that are proven calving ease bulls and both are a 7 on CED. The EPD`s on the young bulls you posted look fairly solid in most areas. Bull three could use a little more growth EPD`s but bulls one and two have super milk EPD`s and plenty of growth also. Personally I would be leary of a 95 lb bull on heifers but I have to keep in mind that you are in Washington and I am in the South. I know they say everything is bigger in Texas but the cattle are bigger up your way and Montana, SD etc. I base my heifer bull choices more on BW and BW EPD because I believe it would be more accurate. Also just as in other breeds , Limousin have bloodlines that have been known to produce larger calves. If the young bulls are out of proven bloodlines with higher accuracies and have lower BW EPD`s that would help if I were making a decision to breed heifers. If you decide to AI to Limousin sires Im sure your neighbor could help with a decision on Sire/s to use or I would be glad to give you some suggestions if you like. Best of luck with your heifers.

We don't breed Lim's to heifers. It may be we are old school but I've seen it back fire. Try an angus or red poll.

Let them have the calf then sell it at weaning. You will have gotten them through their first calf and have her for many more years.
