I have been looking for a low birth weight black GV bull to use on wf english cross cows. I plan to keep back some of the heifers. Someone suggested to just go with a limi to get a little more muscle and lower birth weights than GV... Any thoughts how how half GV vs. a half lim x wf replacements would work out?

A. How tall are your fences?

B. How fast can you run?

Go with the gelbvieh. Just from my personal, first-hand experience. But what do I know?

Might as well use the real deal instead of them generic German Limi's. Got Limis myself and work them any where i want to with 5 ft. panels. Have not had one to run me out of the corral in many years. Some off them don't like for you to play with there babies..

Don't no how far you are from Morris mn. but Wulf Limousin raises some good ones. They won't jump fences and they won't eat you.

I've only had experience with full blood Gelbviehs but they put on plenty of muscle. Limo's aren't as bad temperament wise as they used to be. But then there is plenty of Limos that won't put the muscle on your calves. I think which ever breed you go with, go for a good one. And if you're looking for replacements, keep and eye out for maternal traits.

Steve, not sure how far you are from Morris MN, but Wulf Limousin has their sale coming up March 26, Im sure you could find what your looking for there.

Why is it that every time someone ask about a breed other than Limi or Angus they get a lecture on where they are missing the boat.

Steve there are some very good Gelbvieh breeders in Mn. Just go to the AGA home page--gelbvieh.org- and search for your state. You will find all the info you need.

One who you should look into is Shaefer Farms Goodhue Mn. www.shaeferfarm.com . They are having a sale on the 27th of Feb, featuring GV,Balancer, and Angus bulls.

There's also tons of GV breeders in SD, and Iowa for you to look into.

For the record I believe the reason you don't find a lot of GV/Limi crosses is that the heterosis between continental breeds is not nearly as high as Continental/British.

I am not gonna sit here and knock Limi's but for the rcord the closest I have come to dying in the last 10 yrs was from a 2yr old Limi bull just for trying to go in the pen and water him. Draw your own conclusions.!

I am about 2 hours from Morris. There is one bigger operator close by who run red Wulf bulls. His red calves top the sale and I think Wulf buys them back. Seem to be calm calves. There is another local operator who runs a black Limi bull. Nice calves also but he has had to nail 4' cattle panels onto the top of his wood corral.
I have 2 limi cross cows now. A little high headed but manageable. Seem to be very good doers. The wife is a little slow getting over the corral fence to I ship the problems.
I will check more into the low birth weight GV options and get a Wulf catalog.

Thanks for the tips.

Three way we all no that you won't knock the Limi's unless you get the chance. You spend a way more time on here pimping Gelbvieh than all of us Limi breeders put together. Seems like the topic of this thread was Limi cross replacements. They will work for Steve or any one else that care to use them. With the added advantage of at least 3 Branded beef programs for the Limi x calves.

Come on RBB you are the biggest breed pimp on here next to Frankie. At least she is honest about it.

If you want to say that kind of stuff. You find ONE thread where someone asked about another breed and I told them to consider a Gelbvieh.

I give Gelbvieh answers to Gelbvieh questions. He[[ man someone could ask a question about rabbits and you would tell them that they need to change to RED Limi sires.

Case in point. Go take a look at the thread;Considering a Charolais bull . The first words out of your mouth are "try a limi". In fact those are ALWAYS the first words out of your mouth.

Heck Three Way this thread was about LImi Cross Replacements. And your first post on it was about what breed of cattle. Kinda the pot calling the kettle black ain't it.

Watch it buddy. I probably resemble that remark. :cowboy:

I like this post referring to the Limi questions --- if there was ever a fool born on this planet it was the Limi lol------ I wouldn't have one of those lean beef breeds from France -- the Country that likes supplying Uranium to Iran

I figure if pimping is done on a % of cattle being raised in the good ole U.S.A. ....GV should be 3% , limm should be 7 %, and Black Angus 35 or 40 %...Think that about right Frankie?????????????

I agree. Limo cross steers are the only ones while working at the sales yard that I saw get wound up enough and grow big enough to clear a 7' fence, and get their knees up and resting upon the 8' sales ring frame.

If you get attached to them, you can at least keep the GV X's for good maternal cows. Limo X cows require a different sort of cattleman. A limber and fit one. :cowboy:

I have had Limousin cattle for close to thirty years, have never had very much trouble with them. In the last fifteen years we have had nice calm cattle.

Cmon RBB, you know its always the same comments, all we need now is the one that has the rich neighbor that pulls 25 calves a year out of his limmi cows. Heck my limmi cows dont bother jumpin gates, too easy, they jump over my barn. Red bull Breeder, dont tell anyone this, but the cow that jumped over the moon, was a Limmo x.

Easy on gate and fence's ain't they.

Now THAT, might just be one of the funniest things I have seen in a while.

Good sense of humor RBB :tiphat:
