does anyone have a limestone fireplace/chimney? i'm going to have to replace two brick ones (i may just put one back) in an old farmhouse and i'm having a tough time deciding b/w limestone or an old looking brick. is there anything special you have to do for a limestone one like maintenance wise or anything?

the ones i'm replacing are leaking like all get out and some of the bricks have completely disintegrated. they are on each end of a two story piece, i'm thinking about not putting the one in the bedroom back b/c that wallspace could better be utilized to put a bed on the wall and that would allow for a window upstairs.

anybody got any good links?

I dont know about the treatment of limestone for using them in a fireplace.. but I got tons of them around my place. hardest rock I know of.

We have had one for 30 years and all I do is run the vacuum with brush over it once in awhile.

You may be limited to putting in what a good mason can do for you.

Here's a good link

Beefy, You need a good fire brick lining no matter what you use. I have quarried tons of limestone and used to cut it with a hydraulic breaker. I sold the breaker.

Every now and then I pull out a perfect natural limestone mantle. The eldest daughter hauled the last three of to her house and is using them for benches.

The next house I build will have a double sided free standing limestone fire place.

There are two old home places on the farm. The only thing left standing are the chimneys.
