I think there are different types of lime....but, feed it in small amounts as a source of Calcium, put in wet lots to harden the ground, around water tanks, etc., helps prevent foot rot when cattle walk in it, and you can mix it with water, and white wash your barn (paint).

Thanks, I remember cleaning out the stalls and spreading it around when I was little. Do people still do this? Was gonna put some around the feed trough and water tank where its muddy. I thought that mixing it with feed is not good for your cows. Is this not true?

It is good especially in water saturated areas as it acts as a water reducing agent. Put alot of it on highways to strengethen subgrade befor base course goes over it.

I keep a bucket of lime in the truck for that odd time when the ground gets a little slick and muddy (not that that would ever happen here in Missouri (pronounced MISERY). Spread some lime on the spinning tire and the ground around it and you might get lucky and get out of a tight spot. Dang, I'm tired of MUD!

As Dee said, there are many lime products on the market. Some are extremely caustic - no offense Burno - make sure you get the right kind for whatever the intended use!

Dairy friend of ours beds the cattle in it, that is standard pulverized lime. keeps the mastitis cases way down.

We of course use it for spreading on our fields before we fertilze as we need to sweeten our high acidic ground , other wise we are throwing ferterlizer on it for naught.

We have heard of feed additive, but have never tried. perhaps gypsum does the same?

We use hydrated lime to spread over the 'footprints' left over after we move our calf hutches, ( we bleach also) works wonders killing so many pathogins left behind, we also dust our barns often with it, especially after cleaning, or we get a sick cow in there. JUST DON"T TOUCH IT WITH BARE HANDS... and it does get caustic when contacted with moisture, can get pretty nasty on your skin, wear a dust mask if you handle it alot as well.

It;s also great squeezed into a big tumbler of Meyers run, not to bad as a replacemnt for a lemon with Tequilla either.
