Hello,

I am new here and hoping that someone can help with a question.

I have a 5 year old cow that is pregnant and due in about 15 days.

About 2 weeks ago I started noticing that she seemed to be very itchy. Constantly rubbing against barn wall or post etc.

At first I was thinking she had dry skin or something. Then about a week ago she starting rubbing patches of hair out. On her hind end she has it bair and also some spots on her topline and around the neck.

Researching this I seem to have assumed it must be ringwork or Lice. With it leaning toward Lice due to the constant Itching. She is not confined to the barn but generally stays in during the cold months more often than not.

I am wondering if treatment with Ivomec Exprinex is SAFE first and foremost for a cow who will hopefully be giving birth very soon as well as her calf?

From what I read this is the time of year when Lice seems to hit? I wasn't bothered by it at first but not that she is starting to lost patches of hair I would like to get her feeling better etc.

Any help or direction is very much appreciated.

Thanks

There are any number of resonably priced pourons for treatment of lice. We use UltraBoss, it will also help with flys for about a month.

The newest product to the market is called Standguard. Its made by elanco, simple dosages 10cc for under 600 pounds, 15 cc over 600 #. Works great for lice, and flies as well. Its a gamacyhalathron vs the others on the market are lambdacyahlothrin. Gama is a generation ahead of lambda. I think it runs $35/ bottle treats 90 head unfer 600# or 60 head over 600#

What is the advantage of being a generation ahead?

She may just be shedding her winter coat coming off. Where are you located at? Could be lice or ringworm also. Either way, it wouldn't hurt anything to give her a pour on or shot of Ivomec or something like that.

I treated her with the Eprinex Sunday afternoon. Giving it a few days to see how she does.

I don't believe it is shedding. a little to serious on the scratching etc. Thank you all though!

I noticed pretty much the same thing today. I've got this cow, who I think would fit in fine in satans herd. It has it around its neck and at the base of the tail. Looks like dry cracked skin. I think that it is mange however, just because that's the description it fits. I was lucky today as I was giving shots and using some Ivomec dewormer. The dewormer was the only thing I was able to apply before the cow went buzzerk. Apparently it works also for lice, mange and other stuff. At least thats what it says on the box. We'll see.

Just an aside here
I was using injectible Ivomac for years and one day I realised there were no dung beetles working my manure.
I scratched around all over my property but found not a one . I stopped using injections 3 years ago but I still have no dung beetles appearing anywhere so whatever they use it is sure a long lasting poison.
