When was the last time you sent or received a letter in the mail? And I mean snail mail, not email. Im writing one to my husband and just realized that i haven't done this in years.

Do Christmas cards, Sympathy cards, and Get Well cards count if they have hand written personal notes in them?

If they do, I sent cards just before Christmas and will send a get well card in a day or two.

Yes, FarmGirl10, almost a lost art. And pretty soon, nobody will learn how to physically write anything (some school systems have stopped teaching cursive and the kids are not able to READ cursive).

But, take it a step further. You probably don't remember manual typewriters. Real carbon copies? Correspondence transcribed by a secretary and formatted properly on a piece of expensive stationery? Now everything has to be absolutely instant! A fax isn't fast enough. Spelling has gone down the toilet.

Never mind, just the ramblings of an old office person......

I would say they count.

Gale - I've pushed buttons on a typewriter and got in trouble as a little kid. But never actually used one. Never try to get me to write in cursive, i forget half the letters, but i still can read it.

:frowns: Oh no!!!!! :cry2:
We only had to use it the year we learned it. And since I didn't know it as well it took longer to write, so i just stopped using it.

I always send bday cars ,sympathy cards ; get well cards etc . They are much more personal than an email ,I like to call folks as well. But sometimes a letter is something you can cherish for years to come. You can bring it our every once and a while, really feel the scratches of the pen, the paper it was written on ,and knowing that it was in their hands while writing heart felt words from them to you means an aweful lot sometimes. Especially for your situation FG .

In a past life I thought i wanted to be a cop so I went through the academy. They taught me to write in all caps. I've been doing it every since as my cursive looks like hen scratch.
You'd be amazed how many times I write something tender and heartfelt and get a reply like, "you write like a cop".
Having also spent some time away from home, I can absolutely assure you that it doesn't matter what you write or what it looks like. Just write SOMETHING. When everythings fine it's a waste of time but when things aren't fine it's the differance between life and death.

I know he will love the letter, along with all the goodies in the box. :) Knowing him he will probably keep it in his pocket. I hope he can figure out how to send them here, he was going to look into it. If i get one it'll be framed and on the wall.

That's pretty much the way I do it now. A card, for whatever occasion, with a hand written note. Sometimes the note turns into a pretty long letter, sometimes it's just a couple of lines. I can't remember the last time I sat down and wrote a letter just for the sake of it.

You know, I got so carried away with cursive and typewriters and all that foolishness, I forgot that you are writing your husband a letter! I'm embarrassed!

Write, write, write away, print, cursive, whatever...just write it because he's far away and will treasure it being from you!

Lol, its okay. :) I'm starting the letter on the computer until it says exactly what i want it to say then copying down onto some stationary (still need to go buy it). Don't want to have to redo the letter every time i adjust something, because that would take me forever. And be a lot of wasted paper.

Nobody (half the time including me) can read my hen scratching anyway. Why waste the effort of putting it in the computer just to print it out and stick it in an envelope with an address that the post office probably couldn;t read anyway.

You could always print labels from the computer, lol.

I guarantee you it will be in his pocket everytime he goes out, goes to the mess hall, goes to the latrine, or any place else. Since letter writing seems to be a lost art, might I suggest you use the old standard tradition of "SWK" (sealed with a kiss). Bright red lipstick with your lips pressed on the paper will mean more to him than you know, and perhaps a light mist of your perfume that he likes. - BTW, don't send just "a" letter. Send many and often. It shouldn't be a problem for him to send mail. Every unit has a mail drop somewhere. You may want to include a witing pad and enevolpes in the box. Unless it's changed first class letter postage is free for them.

Thank you and him for your service!

Thank you. Now that just sounds like a fabulous idea, will have to go through all my make up to find the right color. I hope your right about the outgoing mail for them, but from what he has been told the only drop he could use is at a different base. :( And he doesn't trust anybody to bring it there.
