I have 2 Reg Brangus up for sale and was approached today thru Email for someone in my Area intersted in leasing on of the bulls to breed a few of there Heifers. Does anyone know the going rate for this and is it worth while to do so. I have my own bull on property and was never approached with this before. I was not sure what the fair price to ask for would be

I do not believe it is worthwhile to lease bulls - either for my herd, or me leasing to another person. It is very difficult to establish that the other person has a proper health program in place, and there is simply to high of a risk of that bull becoming infected with something that I would have to then deal with, could infect my herd, or could cause serious damage to my reputation when/if he was leased to the next person. Perhaps I'm being overly cautios, but that is how I feel about the subject at hand.

I wouldn't think heifers would have any std's so you shouldn't have much to worry about as far as that is concerned. I would think depending on the quality of the bulls they should be worth the price of 2 straws of semen per heifer, but less if it is a young kid trying to get started.

We have leased a bull only once and that was several years ago. We run only a spring calving herd and had a past customer of ours needing a bull for his small fall herd - and we didn't have any to sell him. We ended up leasing him our herd sire for $500 for that fall, winter, and early spring. It was a little old man (90 yrs young) and he had about 35 head to breed. We felt he had good practices and our bull came back for us to use that spring in better condition than when we took him over. Check with a vet, but I believe a lot of the potential STD problems can be minimized by vaccinating and given X days to clear up (if they existed) before turning him into another herd. I agree with the others, on giving the HS student a hand - especially since you have a "spare" bull. If he/she doesn't have many head to bred, maybe you can work a deal if they live close and help trade - as in work on your farm for part of the bull's lease to help keep costs down. I know we never have a shortage of items that we could use help on.

We lease some of our yearling bulls, generally for $500 and you get him till fall or early winter. He comes back in decent shape, broken legs or such you bought him for the price established at the time of lease. If he comes back good we then get full salvage value. Generally any bulls we lease we will feed for a bit and sell as slaughter bulls then there is no chance of getting somthing bad from another herd and we get $1000-1500 per bull. Not all our bulls are availabe for lease but the average bull seems to work out well this way.

I disagree. Unless you know these heifer's history, the chances of them being infected with an STD is just as high as any cow.

most guys will lease bulls around here for $6-800 bucks for one breeding season. i personally wouldn't lease bulls for the simple reason that the mindset of alot of people these days is that "if it's not mine, i don't need to take care of it." Sometimes people lease a car because they cant afford to buy one, so they figure while they have it they might as well use the heck out of it. same way with lease bulls. i know there is a lot of people as well that treat lease bulls as if they were their own or better, but you just have to be careful.

Why not just have the heifers tested for STD's and if negative have them come to your place for 60 days if you want to help the kid.

Seems kinda silly to lease a bull for 2 cows?

Just my 2cents
