Anyone have any usefull ideas on how to remove the blades on a riding lawnmower? I've been struggling with the darned things for 2 days now and they will not budge.

WD-40 and lots of it. Not being a smart a-- but are you sure you are turning the nut the right way.

It's my fondest hope that none of the peanut gallery sees your post 3way!

That being said, do you think I'm Lucille Ball or something tightening the dam thing or what? (that's completely rehtorical, you don't have to answer that) ;-)

Impact wrench

Will use that on my next attempt once my toe heals.

I put the box end of a wrench on the bolt then stick another box end wrench out on the open end of that one. 1/4 turn and you can get the rest of it with the first wrench. I also run it up on a ramp to get some ground clearance.

Some mowers have right handed threads on the blades.

MM, you might check, on most mower decks, they spindle has a bolt that goes all the way thru. Put a wrench on the top and the bottom and it usually comes right off. Helped the neighbor with the same problems as you, he fussed with it for several days, I was all for the impactor, but son tried the wrench, came right off. Good luck.

Thanks for pointing that out.

I'd contact angie. I'm sure she can help you with your nuts.

Great..........

Thanks to all for the responses, I will update if I ever get the suckers off.

Take the whole deck off and flip it upside down for easy access. If you're real serious about ever having to take the blades off again, put some anti-seize compound on the bolt threads before re-installation.

I think they put that lock-tight stuff on most of them now.....last one I removed it took a pipe wrench and abot a 6 foot cheater pipe. When it finally popped loose it sounded like it broke. Am impact would have been much easier.

Like the blade on a skillsaw, the cutting motion keeps the blade bolts tight. They need anti-seize because there's no way they're backing off during use.

On most of my grass cutting devices, I got lazy and found another way! I just sharpen the blades on the machine. Even the bush hog! I just raise it up, put jack stands under it, crawl under it with an angle grinder, and sharpen away! On the lawn mower, I do nearly the same thing only instead of the angle grinder, I have a small, pneumatic belt sander that will reach in tight places. Seemed like the thing to do!

Update on the mower......I think I got it taken care of. Since I couldn't get the blades off and the yard looked like the he77, I went ahead and mowed, when all of the sudden the front end like locked up and I ran it into the propane tank. Now this is not such a bad deal cause I'm going to let the lawnmower fixer fellas put new blades on when they fix the front end OR I'm buying a new one. :D

One of the best tools I´ve come across lately is a 5¨ grinder. There are very narrow cut off wheels available nowadays that are excellent on lawnmower bolts where the replacement blades come with new bolts. Just slice through the nuts in 3 seconds and knock out with a small hammer or punch. Better even than OxyAccetelene.
