was seeding the other day and trying to save the kildeers nest sure like to see those little guys when they hatch---was wondering where do they go down south in the winter.---also last year had a pair of canada geese nest by our dugout-now this year we have about 3 pairs nesting ,nice to see but I can see them being a problem in not to long ---you know,we dont have the hunters we use to have--- young people dont seem to be interested anymore.

We always go around the Kildeers as well. As for geese - I have actually went to the local hunt club and requested hunters - got a good bunch and they have since become my "land watchdogs."

Turned out they lived close by - a couple of older guys who have become good friends.

Here it is illegal to shoot a canadian geese. There is fine and jail time involved if you do.

No hunting season at all?

According to an article I read, the US has special hunting seasons that are used to control the population of Canadian Geese, possibly other migratory birds as well. It didn't mention if these seasons were in all 50 states, or not.

That's part of the problem with our immigration policies. Every nationality is welcome to swim over or fly over the borders and they are protected.

Just a little sarcasm----

Here in NorthWest Arkansas the game and fish comission started a Canada goose stocking program about i guess 20 years ago. The only problem with their program was that the geese do not migrate. They just keep multipling. And alot of the veteran waterfowl hunters here wont shoot them because the geese are almost domesticated. And it is sort of like shooting a tame animal which not very sporting. So the Canadian geese just keep growing in numbers and becoming more of a nusiance than anything else. You can not got to a golf coruse or park without goose sh#t everywhere you look or have geese running up to you for a hand out.

30 years ago it use to really be something if a waterfowler was to kill a Canada goose here. And you did not see alot of them migrate through here. Well there was several but it was still something specail to see back then.

But now they are not going to win any populatiry contest with the natives here exspecially the row crop farmers.

The other day when i was at the farm i saw a pair of Kildee's that have 3 little ones that had just hatched.

I was coming home from the stock tank with my grandson and nephew (we'd been fishing). Got behind a kildee...gave him the right of way. I'm not a bird person...but I do like to watch kildee.

Get a Border Collie and you won't have geese on your place anymore-- and your neighbors will have even more-- then you hire your dog out to get them off their place-- which concentrates them next door and you hire out to that place too------ on and on and on.

Golf courses? :o

there are usually scads of killdeers here but i havent seen many this year. i'm thinking that b/c of the drought there are less insects and thats why i havent seen many insect eating birds like killdeers and cattle egrets yet.

they normally are nesting when we plant cotton (now).

Yup. They patrol the course on their own and take care of business! ;-)
