I remember when gas went to 25 cents a gallon, there was a real run on locking gas caps. I've noticed when I fuel up that no one has them anymore, or at least none of the vehicles I've seen fueling in the past month that I started looking for it have them. I'm curious if they aren;t available anymore, people aren;t stealing fuel anymore, or no one cares if their fuel gets stolen.

Most newer vehicles over the last 15 years the tanks are theft proff. There are whats called flappers in there that make a hose impossible to get to the tank.

I know they're supposed to be but I've syphoned fuel out of my trucks. The hard part is getting the hose out afterwards, but it can be done.

Back in the 70's when I was trucking, stealing fuel was a major problem.
Know of some carried a 12volt pump and would steal your fuel out of your truck while you were asleep at a truck stop.

Got a known crook around here that steals gas. Got a guy we know one night. The guy had just fueled up his suburban came out the next morning and the tank was almost empty. He got a locking gas cap. Alot of people are looking for them.
The worse part is the bulk fuel tanks. One neighbor got hit. They unscrewed the plug to the hose and after taking what they wanted just let the rest drain on the ground. He lost 400 gallons.

If someone stole the fuel out of my truck I'd be forced to call the insurance company and report my truck totalled.

Did leave my dump truck on the side of the road with a truck body on back of it for sale a few months ago. Went back to pick it up a few weeks later and my half-tank was no more. At least they left me enough to get back home on...

Do like the car dealers do: Only put 1 gallon of gas in the tank...

I learned the hard way back in the 70's. Bought a new 4WD truck. Headed out on freeway to top off the tank. Fuel guage was defective. Thought I had 1/4 tank...NOT!

Another Option to foil theves:

Install a fake gas cap door with a fake spout to an auxiliary tank. Fill the auxiliary tank with 1/4 gas, 3/4 water. Somehow disguise the "real" tank spout.

Git R Done!

with my car you have to use a key to get to the gas tank open. its an 89. with my moms vehicle you have to push a lever on the inside. its an 06. but im sure it wouldnt be too hard to pry it open if someone wanted to. *knock on wood*

I guess I am lucky as I have a dog who doesnt like other people touching my truck. Shes so dedicated she sleeps in it most nights. Don't think i have to worry about people stealing my diesel.

my neighbor was having fuel stolen from his drum so he locked it up with padlocks on the hose and fill cap. he went away for the weekend and he lost half a tank. then he installed a video camera and caught another neighbor unscrewing the vent and siphoning it out to 55 gallon drums in the back of his truck. he would back rite under the lean to fill up cause he knew the guy was gone.

Belive me it is still a problem. We have a fleet of 14 tractors & trailers that we haul our rice and sugar cane crops. I moniter fuel consumption as close as I can but when you hire that many drivers for seasonal work I know we are asking for trouble.

Off subject but one time was sleeping overnight at the Calumet truckstop in chicago.
A driver woke another up and asked him to back up a little so he could get out. He guided him back about 8ft or so and motioned him to stop. The next morning he found he had backed up on blocks and both rear outside trailer duals were gone.

Cal I heard a simular storey from my great uncle. He used to own a gas station at the foot of a national monument. One night after the state road guys had filled up their trucks, he looked outside and saw a car with about 3 guys stealing gas. He grabbed his pistol, stepped outside and yelled," You get out of here you bleep-bleep-guns!" He then went to shooting as they tore out of there.
About 6 years later an old family friend was visiting and they got on the subject of that night. The friend then told him that he was one of the guys out there that night and it took them a year to get all the bullet holes out of that car.
