Keeping cows off hydrant?

Just put a couple hydrants in and the installer (idot) left the hydrant a couple feet off the fence post. Thinking about adding a couple post beside hydrant and wrapping it in barbed wire. Any better ideas out there?
 
Our freeze proofs are all out in the middle ofvarious pastures. I drove in a couple o T-posts and made a hoop out of old cattle panels that slide over them and wired the hoop to the posts. You can still reach the hydraunt through the panels but the cows don;t hurt them even though they scratch on the posts and hoops all the time. I made the hoops first, about 24 inches in diameter and set tehem in plac ethen drove the T-posts inside the hoops
