Wife was going through bills today getting taxes lined out.
She came across a recurring charge from Catherine’s ( not sure of spelling ). It’s a women’s clothing store.
She’d went to the store in Lexington and bought something. Since then she’s been getting a $15 charge that’s been coming out on the monthly credit card statements. She’d ordered something from them online kind of midway through, and she just thought that the charges were those purchases. We pay the card statements off each month to avoid paying interest.
She looked closer at it today after she saw that it was recurring, and knew she hadn’t bought anything from there for a while.
She called and was told that the charges were for their rewards program which she had been signed up for. She doesn’t remember signing up for any rewards program as she usually doesn’t, and she sure wasn’t made aware of a cost to it if she did sign up because she definitely would not have.
She is supposed to be reimbursed.
That sounds odd because at $15 per month is $180 per year, What kind of benefits would anybody get for paying that much money? It looks like an unethical business practice to say the least.

Seems that a lot of people these days (I imagine not most of us here) have a ton of subscriptions to various streaming services for sports, movies, tv, music, and other things. Apparently it’s quite common for them to not pay much attention to those smaller monthly charges to their credit or debit cards, and it leaves the door open for this kind of thing.

Ky hills is absolutely right, you can’t be careful enough with those accounts.

That’s what what we said, we figure they hook a lot of people like that, and most probably never realize what’s going on and keep on paying it.
A few years ago a computer security subscription gave us fits. We’d get a yearly fee for a subscription that was supposed to have been canceled. It took I think about three years to finally get it straightened out.

If it is charged to your debit card just change the card number. Your bank will also do the collection of back charges. I had to do this a month ago. The company said by buying something from them I agreed to a yearly membership fee.
After cancelling your Platinum membership, do you still have access to the VIP Lounge at Buc-ee's?

Ours was a credit card, but sounds like the same situation as she doesn’t remember anything being said to her about signing up for membership.

Also be careful especially if you have elderly parents. My mom was having memory issues. I found multiple cards from stores , gas companies, along with her regular credit card . She had not purchased anything from the stores but they had sold her insurance and some other bogus charges. It took me awhile to cancel all those cards and payoff legitimate charges . I still won’t shop at JC Penny, Sears and some local clothing stores. All the cards were done over the phone . Think Pennys and Sears are out of business, at least in our area .

It’s a shame that places try to set things up to take advantage of people, on the premise that they will not “find” or question the hidden fees and pay them anyway.

Unfortunately even this won't work. The bank will just move the charge to your new card. I bought my son a Gopro camera for Christmas some years ago, through an online store. They signed me up for something without my knowledge. Once a year a charge of about $25 would come through on my card. I had no idea what it was for. I refuse to pay for something I don't want and did not order. My bank reversed the charges, and I suppose the bank took the hit. After two years and many unsuccessful attempts at trying to get in contact with someone at GoPro, I finally cancelled the debit card and got a new one, but the next year the charge came through on the new card. I did finally get through to the company and got to talk to a representative who assured me they would stop further charges. Their customer service line always put me on hold for a long time and then hung up on me. I finally got through by selecting to talk to a sales representative. It took several tries, but finally one transferred me to the service representative. I haven't seen that charge for a couple years now, so I think it worked, but it was a lot of work to save $25 a year, so I suppose they usually get away with it. I was just too ornery and stubborn to let it go.

That’s kind of how it was with the computer security subscription. When the first one came through, the year after it was supposed to be canceled, wife called and was on the phone for a long time finally got through and the representative said it was now taken care of. Next year out of the blue the charge came through on the statement. Same thing. It took 3 attempts in as many years to get it stopped.

I dont understand how a company can charge you on a new card or how they can even get your new card. With mine once I got the new card that was the end of the billing.

Your debit card is tried to an account, either checking or savings. That is why getting a new card does not stop a recurring charge. a credit card....., then yes.

But the debit card is a certain set of numbers. Change the numbers and they cant access it. If you were paying direct from the account is the only way they can access that account and you have to sign up for that payment. I pay our cell phone bill directly from my account but it has nothing to do with my debit card.

I asked that same question of my bank. They told me that unlike a credit card, a recurring charge on a debit will automatically forward to the new card number. Like Warren says, it has something to do with a debit card being directly linked to your checking account. I had also assumed that a new card number would stop them from being able to get into my checking account, and was surprised to hear the bank say it won't work.

This was with Chase bank. Perhaps a different bank might do things different? I suppose it is to prevent you missing a payment on a utility or another important service when you forget to notify them that the number on your card changed.

The bank i deal with canceled the old card and issued a new one. They also filed the report to get my money back that I had been charged.
My phone is the only thing I have automatic payment for and it's from a different account so it didn't effect it.

My bank did the same thing. They called about the charge before we got our statement.

Damn good catch...

I've been wondering if the Maverick "Nitro Card" is some kind of phishing scam. We get ten cents off a gallon, but I have yet to be able to get the card to work after over a month.
