I'm not in the crossbred biz and I'm not sure if my eyeballs need wiping off, but I like this girl pretty good. She's 5 months and probably in the mid 4's. She's been with her mom at the genetics place getting mom an embryo and I picked them up yesterday. Before I left the guy working there offered me 600.00 for her. I turned it down because I thought she would pound out a lot better than that, so I figured on stopping at the barn to unload her. Went by and never hit the brakes because I truly don't know what to do with her. A young lady was interested in leasing her to show until we found there were only a few commercial female shows, but none locally. I guess my question is what would you do if she was yours? She's Gelvieh over traditional baldy.

Yeah, I can't blame the guy for low balling me. You are probably right because I don't really need another cross on the place. Just liked this girl out of all her sisters.

Exactly if you don't need her sell her I suspect you already have enough pasture decorations lol make $ while its throwing itself at you. get back into the black.

5 months old and wont be able to be bred for a good while. The way I look at it is I generally breed a heifer at 15 months usually so that's another year for me. not sure what prices are bringing in Texas but here a good solid 1200 at 500lbs and bred at best 1800 heavy bred to me the feed she would be eating I creep feed and just her being there eating pasture when I could take that money for selling her at 500lbs I could use to buy a heavy bred cow and get a calf and have a cow that can go on my bull and a calf to sell.

She is a nice heifer. If you need young cows I would keep her. Yes they are worth a lot of money now but none of us know what the future holds. And you know what you have with her and if you purchase a cow it a gamble. We kept most of last years heifers in Feb when we came off of wheat instead of selling them. Many told us we should of sold them. That we could buy back cheaper. Good young pairs are bring 3 thousand up around here now. They would of brought less than 1,500 at that time. A few of them had got bred while still on the cows before they were weaned. One of them was a Limo cross heifer. A very nice heifer but not the best temperent. We plan on selling her in a few weeks. I've been told she will bring at least 2,800. Would bring more if she was Angus, Hereford or a Baldie. In my opinion I would rather keep something I raised that I know the Momma and sire as to purchase something I know nothing about. If you have the pasture and need good quality young cows then I feel it would be best to keep her. We don't creep feed and don't know anyone that does so we don't have that expense.

I will give you 750....

seriously....she is a nice looking heifer....I would have her ready to breed by 14 or 15 mos of age and get a calf from her as a two year old....

if you are doing ET you could always use her as another recip.....

Thanks for all the comments! I've thought thru a lot of this and yes, I have pasture and plenty of hay so there's not a problem keeping her. Using her as a receipt means waiting until her second calf because the BW's on my full blood stock are just to high. Lots of things to consider on this decision.

That offer would have insulted me.

I was offered $1.50 when she was 200. Not much phases me as I had just told the guy I had gotten 2.10 on a sister not as good as this one. He said his offer stood if I wanted to sell her later. All that was said with a straight face, too.

Should have looked him right in the eye and asked him "Haven't bought many lately have you !!!!"

Did find this from last week.

200# - 300# ---------------------------------------------------------------- $255.00 $317.50 per cwt.
300# - 400# ---------------------------------------------------------------- $212.00 $290.00 per cwt.
400# - 500# ---------------------------------------------------------------- $200.00 $245.00 per cwt.
500# - 600# ---------------------------------------------------------------- $189.00 $230.00 per cwt.
600# - 700# ---------------------------------------------------------------- $185.00 $212.50 per cwt.

I get the market report every sale day from Emory (tues & sat), which is up the road from Canton where the Genetics place is. I already knew prices which is why I started at $2.80.

My thoughts exactly. Yeah, it's true Slick can turn a quick buck (profit) on her right now, but if she were mine (I have lots of green and growing grass) I'd take the long view. Calves.

the guy offered you half what that heifer calf is worth.but id sell her at weaning and scrape up enough money with what she brings and buy a reg cow to add to your herd.

Since I want to keep my genetics lined up pretty closely on the registered herd it would have to be a really fancy female if I bring one in. My plan is to retain my heifers for a while in order to build to the size I want.

My commercial stuff will be used for percentage animals to sell off the farm until I get to the size I want, so this girl will be a good filler in the mean time. Unless something happens I think she'll hang around. I do appreciate your opinion.

That is a super nice heifer. Lucky #7. She doesn't need to go to a sale barn for sure. She needs to go in someone's pasture as a replacement cow. She has a lot of depth from her girth to her flanks. She is going to be stout. I would be proud to have her in my herd.

I would love to have her as a replacement heifer in my commercial herd. You can add any ole heifer to your herd. But you can't always add a really good one. She has a really good full rump and nice shoulders.
Very nicely angled legs.

She looks as good as many registered heifers I have seen. I would keep her.

She is a lovely heifer slick. Does your county fair have a commercial crossbred heifer show? She would be a good candidate if you do.
