Junk cattle

i went to a sale barn thats about an hour from me with the intention of buying a few grass stockers.
I was shocked at the lack of quality people were raising. I was there for about 2 hours and i didn't see a single animal i was interested in.
The calves were bad but i couldn't beleive some of the cows that came through, complete junk.
I don't understand why someone would keep such an animal as a replacement.
This is the USA and with all the tools available now days, I just don't understand why someone would waste their time and grass on breeding such poor quality.
I will say i won't go back and there is another sale barn 2 hours away but the quality is 100% better.

The poor cows sold yesterday at .60$ wish I had 100 to sell. Sandtrap, there's no such thing as junk cows. Use to be able to buy sorry cows for .20 to .30 a pound doctor them up and make a $. At these prices you can't afford to lose one. Buy from the farm, your quality will be lots better.

Eastern Texas panhandle
the prices were high considering the quality.
From what i saw Cavendish was buying all the cows, noboby was taking them home, just don't understand why someone ever made a cow out of them to begin with.
So needless to say the calves were bad as well.

Packer buyers are giving more for cows than producers are willing to give. Just because a cow is not a big, fat pretty animal does not make her "junk". Western Texas and the panhandle are still dry. Could it be thse cattle were still under nourished?

Yes it's dry I'm trying to survive.
I've been in the cattle business for 25 years so i know a sorry a_ _ cow when i see one and I saw them today.
I've bought calves for years and I have a good idea which one's will make money and which one's won't and those today won't.
It cost just as much to keep a good cow as it does a sorry one so why anyone would keep such sorry cows.
Good calves bring good money and sorry calves don't so why raise them

People have been raising and selling this type cattle for years so it's nothing new. They usually bring just about what they are worth and buyer and seller are happy. :nod:

the truth is there are people that can make good money off of cattle that others consider junk.those bone thin cows coming through the sale for 2 reasons,1 people wont or cant feed them in a drought.an then they are sold when they have tobe sold.

If this wasn't the case, salers, cracker and scrub cattle wouldn't have any place to go. But even the junk serves a purpose. Usually Walmart and the like

i dont know why u r grouping saler cattle with junk cattle.my salers r excellent cattle.

Maybe it's just the ones I've seen and my impression of them. Don't take it personal I'm sure they're a decent breed. But I also don't have much use for longhorns either. Maybe it's just me.

At the end of the day every cow at the sale was sold. Somebody has a plan.

You have your Leechman and Schaeffer Angus, Star Lake Herefords and so on and so forth who are selling Mercedes Benz and BMW cattle . You have your local Cattle dealers that are selling Ford and Honda cattle. And there are people that are selling cattle that are Kia's and Suzuki's. I am sure people that drive Mercedes dont see any use for a Kia and wonder why anyone would drive one but there is a market for them and often times the BMW and Mercedes Market is smaller than the Kia or Suzuki market. One reason why most of the people you see going out of business in the cattle business sell the Mercedes and BMW cattle. As long as the cattle are healthy and the buyer and seller know what they are exchanging I could care less what kind of cattle they sell the market will decide.
