John Deere 430 string tie question

The sting tie on the 430 baler quit tying. I replaced the power steering pump with a brand new power steering pump off of a 1979 Chevrolet Malibu. Forty seven dollars vs $627 for a John Deere pump. It was an identical match. The string tie mechanism now cycles, however the power steering pump pulley gets hot. With a laser thermometer I measured 200 degrees. Is this too hot for baling hay? What should I do?
Any comments appreciated

Pulley gets hot? Just the pulley and nothing else? Sounds like the belt is slipping...friction heat. 200F is too hot for anything like that and way above the 140F smoking temp of hay which is all over your machine when using it, and surely the belt will degrade if not smoking intself....new belt time, tighten, add belt dressing to the belt type things I'd guess with the limited info. you supplied.

+1 for what TM said...........also are you using the proper oil?..........200 degrees is a little hot, but maybe 160-170 would not be. What is the temp on the pump?
