Hey Caustic, just finished sprigging my MIL's place with JIGGS. Two days after it was done it rained :) . Now I need to know when the best time to fertilize this patch. I know when to put down herbicide but unsure when to fertilize a brand new patch. Don't want to kill it. MIL's five cows are on my 22 acre Tifton hay patch. Every time I go to check on them I swear I hear them humming and singing in low tones. I think THEY think they're in seventh heaven.

First the night time temps need to be above 50 deg I prefer 55 deg before fertilizing. You need to soil test to get the most bang for buck, I usually wait for a rain and fertilize at half rates on new planted gound. Example if soil test show you need 400 lbs per acre I fertilize at 200 lbs and retest in 30 days. Hope that helps.

a little late now, but you can also fertilize before you plant. :D

I tried to avoid burn also I have found fertilizer requirements change on freshly plowed ground. As far as the liquid I have had a lot more problems with burn in the bermuda grasses.

We put out some liguid fertilized at a rate of 200lb per acre and also applied grazon at the same time this last weekend. This is the 1st time we have ever used liquid fertilizer, but it's just on native pasture. We'll see how it does, I like the idea of only having to go over it once for fertilizer and weed spray, instead of twice. Has anyone else done this, didi you like the results opposed to the dry fertilizer?

Yep burnt my bermuda up.

That's just GREAT  I sure hope that doesn't happen, it rained on Monday, I hope it was enough that it won't burn. This is my heifer pasture, and I plan on dropping heifers out there next month. At what rate did you apply it that it burned? We put out 17-4-4 @ 200 lbs.

Your not going to like the reply but 200, I didn't get rain for a week though lying weatherman on Channel 6.

Thanks everybody for all your input. I'll fertilize at the half rate like Caustic said. Sounds pretty sound to me. I don't know about everybody else in thier parts of Texas, but I have some really red clay soil. Tough to work. I've sent to Texas A&M for my soil test. Haven't got it back yet though.

Thanks Again
