I have a jersey that freshened 3-28-08 and hsnt had any problems till today. We wormed her when she freshened and then again 2 days ago. She has grass and hay and is fed 2x a day. She is fed range cubes, alfafa pellets and sweet feed and has loose minerals that are high mag for the fresh grass that is comming up. She ahsnt had any scours till this morning and didnt seem to interested in her feed really. Usually she is a chow hound and is finished before we are thru milking. But she left some this morning. This has got me stumped and any help is appreciated. Thanks

Range cubes, alfalfa pellets and sweet feed??? What's the protein level of those feeds?? Might just be too much protein along with all the new grass. Cut out the cubes and alfalfa pellets.

Yes, too much protien. She may not be as interested in the feed with the new grass coming up ~ it is a big treat for ours in the spring. I would, as TB suggested, cut the cubes and alfalfa. You can even switch out the sweetfeed for corn oats mix ~ it would be quite a bit cheaper for you. Watch her though, going off feed is always something that should perk your ears up.

Range cubes are usually pretty high in protein, as is alfalfa pellets. I'm not sure what the protein content of sweet feed is, but I'm thinking it's probably a minimum of 10-12%. Combine the protein in all these feeds, and it is very possible your cow is scouring due to too much protein - and that could very well be the reason behind her being a little off feed. I think I would cut back on the protein, give her some grass hay, and see what happened.

Well talked to the vet yesterday and I am going to treat her with Excenel and back off the feed for a while and he seems to think its Salmonella...Hopefully this will help her. Thanks for all the replys.
