TOKYO - Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi on Friday said Japan would completely halt imports of U.S. beef after a recent shipment was found that may contain material considered at risk for mad cow disease

"This is a pity given that imports had just resumed," Koizumi told reporters. "I received the agriculture minister's report with his recommendation that the imports be halted and I think it is a good idea."

I am probably going to get tongue lashed for this but I think they are really concerned about the health of there citizens. They dont seem to mind buying our beef if we will just raise it in a manner they think is safe. Do we do what the customer wants or what we want to do?

I did not know that. Besides Canada and Japan where else is BSE found regularly? Or is it common worldwide?

We need to place a ban on sales of all their vehicles. Whether they are built in the States or not. What's fair is fair.Sooner or later we will all be owned by the Chinese and Japs.

I was just surfing around on the subject and found where in Novemeber of 2001 they had already had four cases.
It seems our beef is a lot safer than theirs so what is the big problem? Politics again???

Now There's a plan Crowder!!!!
Seriously, do a Google search on Japanese holdings in the U.S. and the same for the Chinese. You'll be sick afterwards. We need someone to step up to the plate for us and say enough already.Politics and trade. What a joke.Selling out to the foreigners. What a joke. Our future generation has nothing but chaos to deal with. Think it's bad now? just wait...I'll get off my soap box.

I agree Crowder I was just doing some searches and finding some appalling stuff.
Well time to feed the cows, gotta go.
Good day to you Crowder.

Speaking of "off-shoring", I heard on the news yesterday where Winchester was planning on closing its plant here in the States and going to making higher end model rifles being manufactured "overseas"?!? Huh?!?

I am with you Crowder! I am mostly afraid of China! They have so much money to spend, thanks to us sending all those jobs their way. They are looking to buy as many companies as they can. Use to China was happy making parts for Maytag now they want to own Maytag. They do not want to make parts for Chevy they want to be Chevy.

I have thought about starting a retail store that sells only American made products, but not sure what there would be to sell :(

Couldn;t even sell local souveniers, they all come from Taiwan or mexico

I think it would even be hard to find an American made flag, most of them probably come from China.

Paul Harvey commented on that a while back.

I think I take offense to your comment. I wouldn't really say that BSE is found in Canada regularly and linking us with Japan is a little much. Japan has had 21 cases of BSE since the 90's. Canada has found 4 cases - one in 87 that was imported from Britian and 3 since 2003.
Now if you really want to start looking at places where BSE occurs regularly look at places like Spain, Ireland, Belgium, Portugal, Germany and France, they all have at least a hundred of cases since 2001.

If you want to give the customers what they want and start testing every cow you'll soon see the numbers of BSE cases in your own country shoot up. The same for any country.

Japan halts all U.S. beef imports
Japan’s prime minister confirmed this morning that imports of U.S. beef have been halted after officials found what may have been an animal spine in a shipment at Tokyo International Airport. Japan’s agriculture minister, Shoichi Nakagawa, recommended a total halt to American beef imports if officials confirm the shipment contained materials at risk for BSE.
U.S. Agriculture Secretary Mike Johanns issued a statement this morning that the matter is taken “very seriously and we are conducting a thorough investigation.
“Under U.S. regulations, the backbone, or vertebral column, that was exported to Japan is not a specified risk material because it was in beef under 30 months (of age),” Johanns said. “However, our agreement with Japan is to export beef with no vertebral column and we have failed to meet the terms of that agreement.”
Johanns is dispatching a team of USDA inspectors to Japan to work with Japanese inspectors to reexamine every shipment currently awaiting approval, to confirm compliance with the requirements of the export agreement with Japan. Johanns also said the processing plant that exported the product in question has been de-listed and “therefore can no longer export beef to Japan.”
Japan lifted its ban on U.S. beef last month, saying new safety measures would decrease the public’s risk of contamination due to BSE. Under the new regulations, only beef from cattle younger than 20 months could be exported to Japan, and all brain, spinal cord and other “high risk” materials must be removed.
