I know a lot of ya'll don't believe there are any jaguars in the US but I swear I saw one on Sunday. I was riding fenceline on the lease pasture in Caldwell. This place is thick - you can't see 10 ft into the brush but there is a dozer path around the perimiter fence where I ride at. I just saw it for a split second as it ran across the path and under the fence in front of me about 100 yds off. It was about 2 ft tall, 5-6 ft long, jet black with a long tail and it slinked like a feral cat does where it looks real low to the ground. I had to pull back and think about it for a second before I realized what I saw. Of couse, no pics or shots - too quick.

Sidney, I'm to a point I don't disbelieve anything someone reputable has seen...and I consider you quite reputable.

Now, if you start carrying on about sasquatch... ;-)

your not imaging things. there are jags pumas panthers whatever you want to call them around.an im in north east tx.an ive seen 1 or 2 yrs ago in the dusky evening.an ive heard them scream.

Yep,my brother saw one 'bout 45 years ago ,Bastrop county.
Lots of reports of "black panthers"'round here..Of course,no photos..

I've seen a black one in broad daylight, watched him run across a field for about 30 seconds. They are out there, give you a chill when they scream at night.

i too have seen a black "panther" in broad daylight. my dad has seen it once as well just before dark. jaguars are here, nobody said they had to be native.

I don't know why it's not possible, the Mexicans sneak across the border by the millions, why couldn't a few jaguars.

Don't you think with the countless hours spent hunting someone would have shot one in the last 300 years, I don't think they could be native, but I could see one or two getting released for various stupid resonse.

There have been reports of sightings around Big Bend and on west of there. I've seen lions a couple of times in the Brush Country but never a Jaguar.

Are they what the mountain people back east called "Painters" back in the 1800s?Z

Like I said I was riding and I only saw it for a split second. If I would have had a camera it would have done no good, I wouldn't have even been able to get it out of my pack by the time it was gone. I turned around and rode back after I saw it, didn't even cross my mind to look for tracks, but if I did, and took a picture I'm sure it would look just like a cougar track so you couldn't tell by the track it was a black cat and not a tan one.

Anyone think those lions could have a rare black gene like the red angus or even albinos? It could even be a mutation, but a mountain lion coming out black probably wouldn't be so far fetched, but the mother would have some explaining to do. ;-)

There was an interesting show on Discovery or maybe PBS last week about these cats. The name changes in various regions but what we are all talking about is a large cat. They are referred to as Pumas, Panthers, Mountain Lions, etc. now this Jaguar thing is a different story. Some local roadside zoo or some misinformed animal lover may have purchased the Jaguar as a little one not realizing that he would not remain all cute and cuddly when he reaches 300+ pounds.

Yes, you can purchase these at exotic animal auctions.

I suppose there aren't UFOs or space aliens living among us! Next you'll start that nasty rumor about the easter bunny or the one about S Claus, or maybe even (horrors) that algore didn;t invent the ethernet or discover electricity. My world will never be the same

I have seen lots of black panthers. Years ago when I was in Washington DC there were a bunch of them protesting and if I remember correctly scuffling with police.

Dang, that's funny!

I was watching a show on TV a few months back that mentioned jaguars in Texas. I can't remember exactly how, but a ranchers hounds had one cornered in some rocks, the rancher figured it was a couger, but when he got there he saw it was a jaguar. He took a bunch of pictures of it, pretty cool. I can't remember the last time before that were there was a verified sighting, but I thought they said it had been 40 years or something.

It wasn't black, and it could have been released from captivity, but according to the show it wasn't that much of a stretch to assume there still may be jaguars around.
