Dove season has been open, bow season starts next weekend here. I've been going through my gear and spending way too much. šŸ¤£

Dropped a 30-30 off yesterday with the gunsmith to have a pad added. The gun was a tad short for me and it only had the plastic piece on the end. Kind of killing two birds with one stone on that one.

I had bought a Leupold 2-7Ɨ33 for the 30-30. When I took it to the shop for the butt pad and bore sight the owner said a guy had traded in a scope and some other stuff yesterday evening on a gun. He took it out and it was, what looked like, a brand new 1.5x4-20. It didn't even have scuffs from rings. He said also that he didn't think the guy ever mounted it. He sold it to me for $180 ($300 new online). We changed plans a little and put that new scope on the 30-30 and my 308 Marlin goes in Friday for the same butt pad and to mount and bore sight it with the 2-7Ɨ33. It worked out really nice.

Now, I need to start rattling the horns for 30 min every evening to get in shape. šŸ˜„

Who else is getting ready for the seasons to open?

We hunt dove, whitetail and quail. It gets pretty hectic. I always laugh when people try to come hunt then I send them dates and they say they already have some thing planned. Ill say, here let me send you some dates for next year so you can save them. They will be like, ya that sounds good. I have a deal in my calendar that starts Sept 1 and goes through Feb 28. It's labeled Hunting Season. šŸ¤£

Deer season opens here October 5. Season is only 10 days and the tags are a draw. I didn't draw an area tag so I just have a LOP tag which only allows me to hunt on my own property. Well unless the deer go to eating charcoal that LOP tag is sort of useless this year. But I do have a cow elk tag which runs from Oct 18 to Dec 31. So getting an elk should be a done deal again this year.

10 days to open season on deer and turkey for archery. Unfortunately, I have always hunted hard until I bought the farm a few years ago. I see animals in the field while feeding or sitting on the porch etc.....then hang it in the barn. Same enthusiasm for fishing the last 5+ years..... I even have a pond!

This year might be a little slow but next year could be excellent. I know here, burned areas will really draw in the wildlife. They like that reset.

What kind of quail do y'all have down there? Are they bob white or are they another species?

I doubt it will ever happen in Texas but I sure wish they'd cut deer season down to 4-6 weeks. It seems like guys get started around mid September and stop around February first. All the running up and down the road drives us crazy.

You can do more than doubt it. They have been expanding it. The number of hunters is on the decline and they expect it to get worse as a large oart of the population is older.

I'd imagine most of the wildlife has moved to other areas by now. Or do you see deer/elk in the burn? Has there been enough rain to bring back any green?

Zero wildlife in the burn. And it is about 40 miles to the southwest to get out of the black. What deer that escaped are living in the green along the river. But I sure wouldn't shoot one of them. Ranchers down the valley claim to have about 250 elk in their hay fields. There is enough area uphill from them that didn't burn for the elk to go hide during the day and then back to the hay fields to eat at night. And of course anyone with an apple tree has a bear. If anyone ever tells you to eat apples to loss weight they are a liar. My bear looks to have put on 100-150 pounds in a little over a month of all she can eat apples. Maybe 25% of the area on my place has 2 inch tall green. The majority shows no sign of new growth.

My AI guy advised do not let my old fat pregnant Jersey eat apples, keep her out of the orchard. she will get birthing problems if she doesn't loose a few hundred pounds.

When the 55 square mile forest fire burned us out after a years long drought, within 2 weeks a green color spread over the blackend hayfield. The warm season deep rooted coastal bermuda grew back with no rain at all.

We will see game trails going through the balck with in 48hrs and with in a week or two you get that green tint and the wildlife will pile in. The turkey love is.

Som of that probably has to do with timing of the burn.
