I have a 5 month old heiffer in the same pasture with an open cow. Someone told me that it is dangerous to keep them together. They said that when the cow goes into heat she will try to mount the heiffer and might break her back. Is this something I should be concerned about>

If they are the only two together, then she MIGHT try to, but I wouldnt concern myself with it. 5 month old heifers can move about fairly quick.

When you have cow/calf pairs and it gets to be breeding season - the babies get ridden all the time. Like said - they will scoot out from under. Also, if heifer calf cycles, she will "stand" for the older, heavier female. But they usually end up "flattening" them to the ground. Never saw one hurt.
