Has anybody ever had a heifer eat spiratically? Never really good. One time she'll eat it all then not any. Drives me insane. Acts like she's got some kind of upset stomach or something. We're tried different feed and different additives, each with time for her to get used to. Any Ideas!

Crikey! Do a search on this topic - it has been beaten to death.

Upset stomach? Maybe.

Too much feed? Maybe

Too much switching back and forth of feed? Maybe

Not enough roughage? Maybe

Too much of whatever? Maybe

Too hot? Maybe

Bored and unhappy? Maybe

Lonely? Maybe

Too confined? Maybe

Too finished in the first place? Maybe

Naturally picky eater? Maybe

Intelligent enough to bug the owner? Not likely but maybe

Sick? Maybe

And the beat goes on.

Regards

That's what's so odd. She got lots of room to run, free access to all the hay she can eat, she's definitely not getting too much feed, you can tell by looking at her. Great dispotion. We let her try a feed for about 2 or 3 weeks before switching. Usually all we do is add and additive or take it away. We haven't even used beat pulp or extra corn. Just the plain jane mix. I think she's just got an upset stomach. What can we give her?

How much will you take for a heifer that doesn't have to eat?

I think this is a little ridiculous. I get on for help and I get insulted. Maybe you need a chat room not a Q&A Board. I'm calling the vet tomorrow. I KNOW he will help.

Don't bet on it?

Certs, ollie, la4angus - you guys have hurt this persons feelings.

I on the other hand at least offered a few suggestions.

I think I will step outside and se what phase the moon is in.

Just stepped out - no moon!

Your shameful treatment of this poor unfortunate waif has me all torn up inside.

Hopefully you have not damaged this person to the point of no return.

Shameful - you big bullies.

Lets try to get along on here. Maybe rwright is a 12 year old with his first show heifer, you don't know him, so lighten up.
Now, my first step is to take away her free choice hay. Offer her the feed in the am, with about 12 hours to eat it, then scoop it out. Do the same the next am. How old is she, and what does she weight? Has she been poured? All vaccinations up to date? How long has this been going on? Could she have eaten something like a ball of net wrap, twine, etc? Let us know what the vet says.

Probios has helped our picky eaters. We buy the tube and give it to them every other day when they decide to go on weight watchers. Right before Ft. Worth, one of our heifers was teething and wouldn't eat much. That took about 6wks before she got over that. As far as hay goes, we give ours all they will eat. Without the roughage, the digestive system is compromised.
Good luck.

Go back and read my post.
Isn't that about exactly word for word what I posted and not very different from Cert's post. So lets get along on here.

:D Well - went to vet - he gave us a bollus to give her - something to do the antacid or something crazy like that. We have showed cattle for 10+ year and have never ran into this before. She is a Sept 04 calf that is large in her frame size. We have started putting her feed out twice a day and leaving it. She eventually eats it. It just takes her a little longer than the rest. I can see some improvement over the weekend. Going to take awhile for her to catch up. but THANKS to the nice folks out there! We had tried Probias also. Didn't help too much. I also think this heifer is shy a few marbles. Wanted some other opinions.
THANKS! I'll keep you posted on her results!
