Thats very interesting and explains why it is so hard to hunt a gobbler during season. The longer that it takes for all those hens to finish laying before they start incubating her eggs. The longer they are out partying with big daddy Tom keeping him happy just to have there company even though he might be done poking fun at the hen. And just has her presence hanging out with him to party until she has to start work sitting on her eggs full time until they hatch. Is enough to keep him from gobbling and giving away his location to some hunter that has been calling every day all season long and because he still has all of those honey, honies hanging around partying with him.
There’s no need for him to answer back to a voice in the dark saying I am over here and giving his location away. Like that rascal I spent half the day trying to get to gobble but never did.
So the more ladies he has partying with him the longer it will be before he opens his big mouth giving wolf whistles to attract some more honeys to party with.
Just wait until he finally slips up and mistakes my calling for a honey baby doll looking to party. I will give him
a party with that 1187 Remington Super Mag 3 1/2 magnum that he will never forget. He’s Lucky I need to spray pastures tomorrow opening day of season. But I am sure he will be lock jawed anyway and am sure those 8 ladies I saw day before yesterday are with him now perched in the same group if not the same tree old big boy is sleeping in himself.

Just be thankful they do not have a sense of smell! If the did have we would never get a shot.

Then that’s when a rifle might be legal . Was calling just last week to a bird that went silent . Usually means one of two things . He’s with hens and isn’t coming or he’s headed your way . So about 20 minutes later I make a couple low clucks and he blows me up behind me about 40 yards away . I slowly turned my head to see 2 gobblers and they busted me and were gone ! Been that kind of spring for me. Daughter inJust be thankful they do not have a sense of smell! If the did have we would never get a shot.
Laws brother has limited out . 4 in Alabama . Called in 1 for his dad and 1 for my son . He’s coming Friday morning to see if he can sweet talk one for me .

Chickens are the same... although not known to last as long... but fertility to a certain rooster is good for at least 2 weeks... I breed the purebreds in pairs normally, and move the male to different pens with different hens... usually twice a week. keeps them more active... but if I want to switch males for different breedings... have to wait at least 2 weeks after putting in a new male to be more sure about the new male being the father for any eggs saved after that time... and that is not a guarantee....

Seeing turkeys with a pile of poults is one of my favorite things. You start off seeing all these hens with the little ones running around. By fall you see this big group of young males or females and realize they are the only one that made it. Then in spring, its even smaller. The actual recruitment numbers are horrible in a lot of cases and thats not even counting hunting.

Been hunting turkey for 20years now. The best time to harvest is about 10am. I notice at that time the hens go to sit on the nests and the toms are out looking for more.

Are the hens still receptive or letting the rooster mate with them after the first initial breeding ? Or are they done after that one time ?
