Someone was asking me the other day what the insurance fee that is a part of the commission covers.
I told him I thought it covered the cattle from the time they left your farm till they got to the stockyards from any accidents, as well as accidents that may happen at the stockyards.
Is that correct? Or is it different for different parts of the country?

Talked to a guy at a sale the other day said one come in the ring, running wild, hit the wall and fell dead. Wonder how they pay out average for the day of similar weight, or flat rate.

Why would it cover accidents on the way TO the sale barn?
Not sure, but its a pretty good sum of money for just a little while at the salebarn.

It covers from the time they step off your trailer until the time they load on a buyers trailer from accidents that happen at the barn. They will pay around the average if unsellable. They will pay the difference in what a average one will sell for and what it actually sells for if someone will buy it.
Some barns handle it the right way, some won't. Some take a fee out but are actually self insured. Those are the ones you need to watch out for.

I'm not sure how the rate is set but it seems to be a moving target. The big yards like at OKC, the fee is very small.
